Babe Ruth opening day sees
Raiders, Eagles post victories
Area athletes turned in impressive efforts last weekend as they
competed in the state U.I.L. track and field meet in Austin. The
Tidehaven Tigerettes, had a superb outing, capturing the bronze
medal for third place in the team standings of the Class 2A girls
divisioa
Both Palacios and Tidehaven high schools qualified individu-
als for the meet.
The Sharks' Alex Acosta ran a 1:59.0 to place seventh at state.
Acosta, a junior and district and regional champ, was the only
PHS representative to qualify for the Gass 3A competition. Joey
Flores of Dimmitt took the stare title in a time of 1:55.8 with
Glove’s Jason Cade second at 1:55.9 and Atlanta's
Vollie Cook third at 1:56.1.
The Tigerette contingent, led by Jamie Johnson, tallied 26
points to place third in the team standings of their division. The
2A gills fide was won by Celina with 60 while Stanton placed
second with 36.
Johnson had a busy day for the Tigerettes. In individual com-
petition, she took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of
15.1. Seymour’s Ami Peters posted a 14.3 to take the gold with
the silver going to Ranger’s Ketsha Poelinitz in 14.8. Third place
went to Kristi Wqjcik of New Waveriy who ran a 14.9.
Johnson also finished seventh in ute long jump with a leap of
16-8 1/2. A made of 18-3 1/4 earned Hughes Springs' LaKeisha
Alexander the state title. Second went to Tierra Carr of Hawkins
at 17-7 3/4 while DeAndria Mayo of Brazos took third at 17-7
1/2.
The Tigerette squad of Jennifer Johnson, Gayle Brown, Tane-
sha King and Kim Vacek claimed the bronze medal in the 1600-
meter relay, running a blistering 4:03.7. They finished behind
Sunt on (4:01.6) and Celina (4:03.2). The Tidehaven quartet also
took fourth in the 400-meter relay at 49.8. The gold went to

and made it 2-0 as he also ti-

up his double to left by scor-

The Eagles retaliated with a

their half of the frame. Back-
to-back singles by Brian Jack-
son and Brad Calhoun was

the Raiders to a 6-5 win over
the warriors. Eric Gonzales, re-
lieving for Adrian Aguilar,
notched the win. The two

Kunefke across the plate. The
club then moved on top with
two more runs in the fourth.
Three straight walks to Titatta,
Harvey and Jason Constancy
set the table for a two RBI sin-
gle by Kunefke.
The Raiders bounced back

singled in Aguilar with the

narrowly edged out Tidehaven for third with a time of 49.7.
Jamie and Jennifer Johnson joined with teammates Brown and
King to finish sixth in foe 800-meter relay in 1:46,3. Celina was
first at 1:43.5 followed by Stanton at 1:43.6 and Schulenburg at
1:43.7.

finish fourth in foe 400-mcter relay. Top honors went to Alto’s
Fred Hackney at 47.6 while Maypeari’s Earnest Cronowver
placed second at 48.1. Third place was taken by Brad Lawson of
Brest ut 48.4.
The Tigers also registered a sixth place finish by Paul Honon
in the UO-meier hurdles Honon ran a 14.2 in the event which
was won by Bryan Jemigan of Goldthwaite in 14.6. Refugio’s
Dana Robinson was second in 14.7 and Danny Wilson of Bullard
third in 14.8.

PHS All-Sports Banquet
set Friday at Rec. Center
Outstanding Shark and Shaikette athletes will be honored during
foe annual Palacios High School All-Sports Banquet to be held at
6:30 pm. Friday (May 20) at the Palacios Recreation Center.
Tickets for foe event are priced at $5 for adults and $3.50 for
children 12 and under. Tickets are available from any PHS athlete
and wifi also be available at the door.
Awards will be presented to outstanding athletes in football,
baseball, volleyball, track, tennis, cross country, golf and basket-
ball
