Osteoarthritis
BYAMYK&FER ——-
PIpteiwWSmUcOT Bowd of IrUwnl Mtllcln.
Osteoarthritis, also known as a degenerative joint disease,
affects the majority of the population over 50, to 90% of people by
dreir 80’s. Many different factors lead to osteoarthritis. Often it is
inherited or caused from repetitive injuries to a joint.
To prevent osteoarthritis, one should have a regular exercise
program avoiding activities which traumatize the joints especially
ifthey are already affected. OnevirycortmonfiictorthatcdntributeS
to arthritis is obesity—causing excessive stress on the back, ankles,
hips, and especially the knees. Therefore, proper weight mainte-
nance is an important aspect to prevent Osteoarthritis. •
Once a joint is affected, it should be protected from further;
trauma. Pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms should be treated
with anti- inflammatory dregs with Tylenol. Steroid injections are
rarely necessary. Physical therapy should be started, and a regular
exercise program allowed to try and prevent progression of the
disease. Surgery can be sought as a last resort, from a simple knee
arthroscopy, to a complex joint replacement.

the medical profession have contributed as well.
“People in their 70s and 80s are running
and playing golf and tennis on a regular ba-
sis,” Roush said. “These are not the types of Athowm f1hih A*

be doing. But now it’s clear that an active year with lUtlcHeOn ::
lifestyle is one of the keys to enjoying a long,
healthy life.”
Roush also advises not becoming isolated.
“Having a circle of friends, taking the time
to talk with people and interacting witn others
builds emotional ties while exercising the
brain,” he said. “This may also help you to
avoid depression.”
While the life span of human beings may
never change much, steps can be taken to im-
prove'the quality of life during the later years.
