■TESTS
[Continued From Page One]
norms show Texas eleventh-
graders ranking at the 69th
percentile in mathematics, 43rd
percentile in reading comprehen-
sion and 58th percentile in lan-
guage.
The 50th percentile is con-
sidered to represent average
performance of students nation-
wide.
The Texas Educational Assess-
ment of Minimum Skills testing
program was established by
House Bill 72 and measures the
performance of students in all
odd-numbered grades on read-
ing, writing and mathematics.
Students must pass the exit-level
(eleventh grade) test in order to
be eligible to receive a diploma
and have four opportunities, be-
ginning in their junior year, to
pass the exam.

BY ABEL PIERCE
City of Palacios
Building Inspector
This is the end of another year
and soon we will be facing the
first day of another year of the
rest of our life. We are already
deluged with the wise saying of
sages, and the wonderful things
which have been accomplished in
the past year; so I will leave that
to the reporters.
Last Tuesday, I helped deliver
some of the boxes of gifts and
food distributed by Operation
Santa Claus. 1 wish all who gave
to the project could have seen the
quantity of supplies massed in
the Presbyterian Church hall.
This enabled the group of ladies
working there to set aside some
really nice boxes for the over 75
families on their list. My hat is
off to the Mks who took the time
to make f ;e list and “check each
one twice”, then stay to see that
the boxes reached their destina-
tion.
After my few hours, I did
appreciate the Christmas dinner,
with wonderful stuffing and
giblet gravy, prepared as only
Peggy can. Of course this is the
culmination of several days of
preparation. We must not forget
to thank God for the nice warm
houses and good food most of us
have.
But we must get back on the
job! My job makes me more
conscious of the fires and acci-
dents caused by faulty wiring,
and other careless actions which
we read and hear of. Let’s all stay
on the job and prevent as much
as possible. <
Another batch of housing re-
habilitation bids are scheduled to
be opened this week. This work is
progressing nicely, though not as
fast as the folks who need the
help would like. We would like to
repair all of the homes which
need it instantly; but time is
required to insure that the
available money is spent to the
best advantage. All of you who
are in the designated area, and
feel you qualify for aid, get your
name on the list! The city wili
keep applying for grants as long
as there is need.
