Redfish length limits
are now effective
The Texas Parks and
Wildlife Commission,
meeting in Austin July
23, established 16-inch
minimum and 30-inch
maximum length limits
for redfish to be legally
retained by fishermen.
The limits are to be-
come effective Sept. 1.
Under current regula-
tions, a redfish must be
14 inches long to be
retained. Also fishermen
currently-are allowed to
retain two redfish in
excess of 35 inches long
per day.
The present daily bag
limit of 10 redfish per
day. with i oossess^n
limit of 20 will remain
the same. Current bag
and possession limits for
spotted seatrout also will
remain the same, at 20
per day, 40 in possess-
ion. A 12-inch minimum
length limit continues in
effect for speckled trout.
The limits will apply in
all coastal counties. The
commission took the act-
ion in response to data
showing declines in red-
fish populations in re-
cent years, and also as a
precautionary measure
in the wake of the recent
massive kill of mature
redfish along the lower
Texas coast in early July,
Biologists told the~
commission that the die-
off, which affected at
least 4,000 mature red-
fish could have a nega-
tive effect on the spawn-
ing run which occurs in
late August through Oct-
ober on the Texas coast.
Tom Heffernan, Fish-
eries Regional Director
at Roekport, told the
commission that labora-
tory analyses of redfish
collected during the die-
off have failed to identify
a cause. However, he
said Dr. Don Lewis of
Texas A&M University’s
Dept. ot' Veterinary Mic-
robiology has ruled out
disease as a causative
factor.
New bass record set
An Austin resident
fishing in the Colorado
River just a few blocks
from his house on Aug. 4
may have set a new
striped bass record with
a 43 3/4 pounder.
Pete Castro was fish-,
ing a white jig with a
worm trailer in the swift
tailrace waters below
Longhorn Dam at 8:30
p.m. Tuesday when the
big fish hit.
The fish, if certified by
the Texas Parks and
Record set
for stingray
A 213-pound southern
stingray caught from
Galveston bay on May 28
has been certified as a
state record for the spec-
ies.
Jimmy Overturf of
Texas City landed the
fish after a 40-minute
battle. He was using
mulletfor bait.
The stringray was
82 'A inches long and
58'/4 inches from tip to
tip.
The previous record
southern stingray also
was caught from Galves-
ton Bay in June, 1980. It
weighed 200 pounds. —
Wildlife Department,
will be the second con-
secutive state record
breaker caught from the
Colorado River system.
Harry Lamb, also air
Austinite, caught the
current record striper, a
38 1/4-pounder, a few
miles upstream in Lake
Austin on March 21.
Longhorn Dam, which
impounds Town Lake in
the heart of Austin, has
long been a productive
spot for striped bass,
striped/white bass hy-
brids and other species.
Although a number of-
stripers up to 30 pounds
have been caught-there,
none has set a state
record.
The current world rec-
ord white bass, weighing
five pounds, nine oun-
ces, was caught below
Longhorn Dam in 1977.
Castro was using ~a
long surf rod and 30
pound test line.
