ELECTRA—If Cecil Cole ever
heard the song, “Ghost Riders in

ciated himself with it. Last week,
however, he took to the air in a
chartered plane, to round up cattle
on the vast Waggoner Ranch where
ho hae been a cowhand for several
years. The plane cracked up, and
both Cole and the pilot were
burned to death.

Help In Bird Study
AUSTIN, November 22—Quail
hunters in most of the state may
look forward to improved hunting
this fall, Howard Dodgen, execu-
tive secretary of the Game, Fish
and Oyster Commission.
The quail hunting season for the
state is from December 1 through
January 16, both days inclusive,
with a bag limit of 12 per day or
36 per week.
The executive secretary explains
that many counties have special
quail laws and urges hunters to
heck the local regulations before
they go hunting.
Wildlife biologists of the Game
Department are conducting studies
of quail populations through ex-
amination of quail wings again this
year. Mr. Dodgen requests hunters
to cooperate in this work by send-
ing one wing from each bird they
kill to the Game, Fish and Oyster
Commission in Austin.
A study of quail wings will show
the per cent of young birds and
indicate the production and sur-
vival for the year.
To facilitate mailing of wing
collections, the Game Commission
will supply special business reply
envelopes on request. These pro-
vide space for recording pertinent
data and require no postage for
the hunter.
The active help of hunting clubs
and other groups is being solici-
ted.
It is essential that wings from
cocks and hens be placed in sep-
arate envelopes but any number
of wings from birds of the same
sex may be placed together. Only
one wing from each bird should be
saved.
Dated and county of collection
are also necessary. If official en-
velopes are not at hand, any kind
of paper sack will suffice if pro-
perly labeled.
One further bit of information
is requested. In order to compare
quail populations in different parts
of the state, a place on the wing
envelopes will be shown for re-
cording the number of coveys found
per day of hunting.
FAITHFUL STEEDS

DALLAS — Seventy-five horses
that have carried thousands of
riders untold miles during the past
years were destroyed in a fire here
last week. The horses were espe-
cially popular among children.
They were the merry-go-round
horses on the midway at the state
fair here. The entire carousel was
destroyed.

JUST GAB—A. B. Chandler will
serve as commissioner of baseball
for another seyen years ... he was
told that the new contract would
be okayed at the major league
meeting down in Florida. Connie
Mack is expected to arrive in Hol-
lywood right after Christmas to
help movie people in the filming
of his life story. Charlie Root, who
pitched for the Chicago Cubs from
1926 to 1941, will be back with the
Cubs next season as coach . . .
Root skippered their Dcs Moines
farm team last year. Bruce Wood-
cock, British heavyweight king,
has called it quits for good ... he
decided he was through after Jack
Gardner knocked him out in the
11th round.
Lehigh University of Pennsyl-
vania has been playing football
since 1883 . . . and this is the
first time they’ve had an unbeaten,
untied season. Frank Shaughnessy,
bossman of the International base-
ball league, doesn’t believe the
new proposed 4-A rating for Triple.
A circuits will help one bit . . .
the No. 1 problem is major league
radio and television . . . they’re
cutting down attendance. Tom
Fears, the Los Angeles Rama
champion pass receiver, will do a
little movie acting as soon as the
pro season has finished . . . which
is a nice way to pick up some
easy money.

CARELESSNESS CAUSES
DISASTROUS FIRE
COMFORT — A carelessly
dropped cigarette or match was
believed responsible for a very
costly fire which swept over the
pastures of five ranches near here
last week. Two fire departments
aided by 300 other volunteers and
a bulldozer finally brought the
blaze under control.
