NEW CARCASS SHOW
A unique steer carcass show will
l*e a feature of the upcoming 1070
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
An entry must be three steers sired
by the same bull and the bull own-
er must make the entry regardless
of who does the feeding.
The carcass show was designed
basically for cattle breeders in order
for them bo get information needed
to determine the ability of their
herd bulls to transmit desirable
carcass characteristics to offspring.
There will he two classes in each
of the participating breeds. These
are junior calves (14 months of
age and under) and senior calves
(14 months and 1 day to IS months
of age). The minimum live weight
for junior calves is 900 pounds and
JOHN W. COS PER, Asst. Agt.
comes even more important. The
quality of hay directly influences
meat and milk production of live
stock. The better the quality, the
better the animal production.
Hay quality is influenced by
two main factors, fertilization and
growth stage of the hay when har-
vested. Fertiliser increases produc-
tion, quality, and payability. Early
harvest helps conserve high quality.
Most hay crops should be harvest-
ed before seedheads appear. This
stage is reached in approximately
four weeks of growth. Although
hay value can be visually estimated,
a forage analysis is very valuable
tor determinging the protein, en-
ergy and other feeding values. Two
bale,; of hay may have nearly iden-
tical visual characteristics but
widely different feeding values

ers in the spring.
The rose plant should be sprayed
with a fungicide containing maneb
or folpet every 10 to 14 days. Con-
tinue the spray program until the
first killing frost because the
leaves are the food manufacturing
organs of the plant. Thus, it is es-
sential to retain as many leaves
as possible to build up food re.
serves in the plant and to promote
larger flowers with more intense
color. Good food reserves will also
help the plant to withstand severe
winter weather. Examine rose
plants at this time of the year with
a critical eye to determine if there
are plants which need replacing.
