MGH holds groundbreaking
for renovation, addition project
Groundbreaking for a major
renovation and addition project
at Matagorda General Hospital in
Bay City has been set for 4 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 1.
"Groundbreaking will formally
recognize the beginning of con-
struction for our outpatient care
center,” explained Shannon
Flynn, chief executive officer of
the Matagorda County Hospital
District. The project will add
17,000 square feet of new
construction and' 6,000 square
feet of renovated space. “The
result will be a new image, a new
appearance and a completely
new look to the front of the
hospital,” Flynn noted.
Included in the plans are a new
emergency room, three times the
size of the existing one; a new
X-ray department, in which CT
scan, nuclear medicine, mam-
mography, ultrasound and rou-
tine radiographic equipment can
all be found in one place; and
relocation of Respitory Therapy
departments.
“Our main thrust is to consoli-
date and centralize all outpatient
services in one spot to make them
more efficient and more accessi-
ble to patients, ’ ’ he explained.
"The reason we’re embarking
on this new construction is to
respond to health-care delivery
needs,” Flynn continued. "More
and more of the services we’re
delivering are outpatient.” In-
deed, the hospital district has
seen annual increases of 20 to 25
percent in recent years in de-
mand for outpatient services,
along with decreases in demand
for inpatient care. MGH, though
licensed for 110 beds, has
already dropped down to 80 beds
to respond to this industrywide
shift in health-care delivery
patterns.
Groundbreaking follows a deci-
sion last month by the hospital
board of managers to award a
$2.5 million construction contract
to Turner and Associates of
Spring, Texas. The Houston
architectural firm of Brooks/Col-
lier prepared the plans.
The project, targeted for
December 1988 completion, also
calls for $1 million worth of new
medical equipment.
Flynn reported the new facili-
ties will be occupied in stages,
with the Emergency Room ear-
n.aiked for completion first.
Though patient convenience
will be a priority during the
construction project, Flynn poin-
ted out that parking will be a
problem for a while. So a traffic
control person will man the front
door of the hospital to diminish
the confusion.
Included in the construction
plans is a new doctors’ parking
lot on Merlin Street across from
the north side of the Hospital. A
doctors’ entrance on Merlin
Street will also function as
temporary public entrance to the
emergency room for about eight
months.
County officials and represen-
tatives of Memorial Care System
of Houston, which manages the said Flynn. He urges the public
facilities of the hospital district, to attend the groundbreaking, to
will join the board of managers to be followed by a reception with a
"turn the dirt” Tuesday. Other Christmas theme. Pink Ladies
special guests will include "all will be serving wassail and
the former hospital district board cookies in the lobby after the
members we can track down,” ceremony.
