Cancer is the most common
type of cancer in the United
States. And because of its cli-
mate, Texas is exposed to
higher levels of cancer-causing
radiation than are some other
-states.
In 1994, there well be about
32,000 new cases of mali;
melanoma, and about 7
hew cases of basal and swua-
mous cell skin cancer in the
&S. Experts estimate that
about 6,900 deaths from ma-
lignant melanoma, and about
2,300 deaths from the other
types of skin cancer will occur
in-the country this year,
od However, according to Dr.

Daniel A. Goldman, medical
consultant for the TDH Bureau
of Chronic Disease, "All types
of skin cancer occur more fre-
quently in fair-skinned indi-
viduals who have been repeat-
edly exposed to the sun, ultra-
violet light or X-rays.”
He explained that the dan-
ger from sunlight is increasing,
according to scientists, since air
pollution continues to deplete
the protective ozone layer of
the earth's atmosphere. The
incidence rate for malignant
melanoma, the most deadly
form of skin cancer, has been
increasing at a rate of four
percent per year, and the death
rate for all skin cancers has
about doubled during the last
16 years, he said.

mostly preventable, when pre-
cautions are taken. And virtu-
ally 100-percent of skin can-
cers arc curable, if diagnosed
and removed early. Dr.
Goldman said.
Dr. Goldman said that peo-
e should conduct self-exam-
ations of their skins and the
skins of their children. Any
changes in the size or color of
moles or other features warrant
a doctor's opinion.
Dr. Goldman said, "Anyone
who must be in the sun should
use a sunscreen (rated IS or
higher), applied at least half an
hour before going out into the
sun. Use a waterproof formula,
or reapply after swimming or
heavy perspiration. Com-
monly-used chemical sun-
screens block ultraviolet B, but
are virtually transparent to ul-
traviolet A, and may not be as
effective in preventing skin
cancer as previously thought."
A better way to prevent skin
cancer is by avoiding the sun
entirely, but persons would as
least be sure to:
• Avoid the sun’s most in-
tense rays between 10 a.ra. and
f3 pda. ’ * . > ! •
• Never use sunlamps, tan-
ning booths or tanning pills;
and
• Avoid prolonged sun-
bathing.
