Robert Jackson Is
First Alternate For
Alcoa Scholarship
Robert Jackson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. C. Jackson, has been noti-
fied that he is the first alternate in
the ALCOA Foundation scholarship
program for sons and daughters
of Alcoa Employees.
Robert was chosen from a large
group of students making applica-
tion for this program, which is
open each year to sons and daugh-
ters of ALCOA employees who are
senior students in their high schools
and who have good school records.
Word is out that one chosen
speaker for a college graduation
ceremony will urge the grads to
go out into the world and accept
its biggest challenge—finding a
parking place.

FISHING NEWS AT
JEFF'S BAIT HOUSE
Fishing reports from Jeff’s Bait
House are slim as the wind has
been blowing so much this past
week from the north then the south-
east that the fisherman just hasn’t
had a chance.
Three fishermen fished in the
Tres Palacios River the 20th and
caught six speckled trout and two
redfish.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Appling and
George Appling of El Campo
caught six or eight nice flounders
and some nice speckled trout under
the lights at El Campo Club last
Tuesday night.
Mr. Cavallin and Mr. Neal fished
Saturday morning all the way from
Olivia to Palacios but didn’t have
much luck, got three speckled trout
and one red fish.
We’ve had live bait all week and
still have some available.
Medicare Doctor Bills
Must Be Itemized And
Paid For Repayment
Social Security District Manager
Samuel F. Ward, Jr. reminded med-
icare beneficiaries today that doc-
tor bills sent to the medicare car-
rier for repayment must be item-
ized and must be marked paid.
Group Medical and Surgical Ser-
vice (Blue Cross), the carrier
which handles medicare doctor bills
in this area, cannot make payment
for bills that are not receipted or
that show only “services rendered,”
he said. When a beneficiary sends
his request for payment form with
an unitemized or unpaid bill to the
medicare carrier, payment of his
claim may be delayed while Blue
Cross writes back for a new bill.

Beef Cattle Herds
May Need Some
More Phosphorus
COLLEGE STATION—Beef cat-
tle producers need to give special
attention to supplying phosphorus
for their herds. This mineral, sals
U. D. Thompson, Extension animal
husbandman at Texas A&M Uni-
versity, is highly deficient in dry
pasture forage, a condition which
is now widespread in Texas.
Practical methods of supplying
phosphorus to range cattle include
soluble phosphorus in drinking wa-
ter and phosphorus supplements in
mineral feeders.
Where the water supply of cattle
can be controlled, adding phos-
phorus to the water may be the
most satisfactory method, Thomp-
son says. Monosodium phosphate
may be added to water troughs by
hand. Automatic dispensers which
add the desired amount of mineral
solution to a given amount of wa-
ter are also available, the special-
ist says.
If the mineral is added by hand,
recommendations generally call for
one-fourth ounce of monosodium
per eight gallons of water or one-
fourth ounce per head daily. A
stock solution of two-and-one-half
pounds of this phosphate per gal-
lon of water or 100 pounds to 40
gallons of water is recommended
when an automatic dispenser is
used. This machine automatically
proportions the mineral to the
water.
Sheltered mineral feeders offer
protection from wind and rain and
thereby lessen waste. The weather-
vane type is satisfactory if kept
level and treated with a rust pre-
ventive. Placing the feeding trough
12-18 inches above the ground will
permit calves free access to the
mineral. The feeding box should be
divided—salt in one compartment
and additional minerals in the
other.
A mixture of one part salt and
two parts steamed bonemeal by
weight is recommended for self-
feeding where phosphorus is high-
ly deficient. Bonemeal without
salt is recommended in saline areas,
as in sections of the Gulf Coast.
Where salt is fed in mixtures to
control protein intake, bonemeal
should be fed alone, says Thomp-
son.
Additional information on phos-
phorus and other mineral needs of
livestock is available from the local
county agent, the specialist adds.

New Gill Secures
Varner-Hogg Park
WEST COLUMBIA—Thanks to
a benevolent patriot, the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Commission has
moved to perpetuate the natural
locale of palatial Varner-Hogg
Plantation State Park near here.
The scenic greensward marking
the pretentious pecan orchard will
be extended to Varner creek banks
to forever preclude commercial en-
croachment from the exposed Braz-
os River side of the historic site.
This is all possible through Com-
mission acceptance of the latest
grant of 12.99 acres by Miss Ima
Hogg of Houston, daughter of Tex-
as’ first native Governor.
The entire Park area, including
the restored Victorian-period plan-
tation mansion, was donated to the
state by the Hogg family of which
Miss Hogg is the sole surviving
member.
With the almost 13 additional
acres, the wooded park now com-
prises 65 acres, including the mas-
sive pecan orchard. Plans now call
for development and maintenance
of the spacious, shaded lawn so
regally set off by the graceful man-
sion and its mighty wooded pillars.
