Runway runoff.,
A RETIRED Austin den-
tist encountered a teeth-
rattllng experience last
week when the plane he
was piloting nearly flipp-
ed over on Its nose daring
a landing at the Palacios
Municipal Airport. The
dentist, who declined to
be Identified, was on a
cross-country flight as
part of his student pilot
training when he lost
control of the aircraft
upon landing. The plane
went off the side of the
runway, hit soft mud and
flipped up on Its nose and
back on its wing. Al-
though the plane receiv-
ed some damage, the
pilot escaped uninjured. •
John Brewer of Brewer’s
.Amoco used a wrecker to
haul the craft back on the
runway while the pilot
and Pat Booth of the
Flight Service Station sat
on the plane’s tall for
leverage. [Beacon Photo

Local forage is beg-
inning to lose its nutri-
tional value, warns Jim-
mie Stewart of Bay City
Feed in Bay City. “This
means cattlemen should
start providing supple-
ments to their cattle
now,” he advised.
This is particularly im-
portant for cows at calv-
ing time, Stewart empha-
sized, because they will
lose body condition first
rather than milking abili-
ty-
“If a cow doesn't get
the right balance of nu-
trients that her body re-
quires now, the producer
will experience a de-
crease in conception rate
which means a loss in
next year’s,” Stewart
warned. But selecting the

right supplement has al-
ways posed a problem,
he added.
“Guessing at the nutri-
tional value of your for-
age and just matching it
to the protein content of a
supplement is the most
common means of choos-
ing supplements,” he
continued. "But this can
lead to costly mistakes.”
For example, the feed
dealer explained, a catt-
leman could be purchas-
ing more expensive pro-
tein than he really needs
and wasting valuable
feed dollars. Or on the
other hand, he may not
be feeding enough. "And
the mistake won’t show

“We now have a whole
new product line called
Forage Balancer that ta-
kes this guesswork out of
picking a supplement,"
he added. "With this
new concept, Ralston Pu-
rina researchers have si-
mplified the whole pro-
cess, enabling us to pro-
vide the precise supple-
ment each cattleman ne-

These products also
are available in various

feed supplements that
best suit his individual
