Sharks To Meet Port
Lavaca In District
Game Here Friday
Coach Carroll Cairnes fighting
Palacios Sharks, sporting an unde-
feated record in conference play
this season, will meet the Port
Lavaca Sandcrab quintet in the
Palacios high school gymnasium
Friday night in the third conference
tilt for each team this season. A
large crowd is expected to jam the
local gymnasium since the Sharks
are defending an unbroken record
in conference competition and will
be pointing to a victory over the
Sandcrabs to hold their own with
the Bloomington Bobcata, a vet-
eran team that was due to take the
conference basketball title with lit-
tle difficulty.
The Shark team is perhaps the
most improved team in this sec-
tion of the country, but the club
will be hurt in future games with
the loss of Ellis Jensen who wrench-
ed his back and may not be able
to play the remainder of the sea-
son. However, the return of Homer
McClary, who was out with in-
juries in the St. Joseph contest,
will bolster the hopes of the Sharks.
In an attempt to bolster the posi-
tion left vacant with the loss of
Jensen, Coach Carroll Cairnes is
shifting Milam Simons, who has
been playing a forward position,
to guard and wiil likely start
Jecker, who has played little but
showed a lot of improvement in
intra-squad practice, at the other
forward position to team with Hud-
dleston in the event McClary is un-
able to start Manning will work
the center slot, Peterson and Simons
the guards and Bnrr and Abraham
will be on hand to give relief to the.
guard positions.
Palacios defeated the Port La-
vaca team in their first district
meeting in Port Lavaca early iu
January.
The Sandcrabs will have three
men on the squad that are consist-
ent scoring threats. Edwards and
Key in the forward siots can loop a
basket from any angle and Canion
in the center position is always a
scoring threat as well as a superb
ball handler.
ALAPHA CLUB
Twenty-two members of the new-
ly organized literary club for young
women met January 20 at the
Methodist Annex. The program
committee gave an outline of the
programs to be presented for the
rest of the year. The committee
charge of selecting a name for
the club gave its report. The club
voted to have as its name the Greek
word Alapha, meaning “to learn.”
A splendid program followed the
business meeting. Mrs Walter Mi-
lam gave a book review on “Joshua
Bean and God” by Jewel Gibson,
preceded by Beverly Hart reading
short sketch of the author’s life.
Mrs. Milam’s presentation of the
book was so fascinating that each
club member resolved to read the
book at the first opportunity.
