For IRS reports
House takes first step to
abolish detailed records
Congress voted today to pass
H.R. 1869, which removes the
IRS requirement that forces
taxpayers to keep detailed re-
cords on vehicles used for
business purposes.
"In passing this greatly need-
ed bill, the House has taken the
first step in reversing the current
burdensome regulations,” de-
clared Sweeney. "We need to
ensure that deductions claimed
by taxpayers are legitimate, but
not to the extent that indivi-
duals are overwhelmed by unfair
mileage-logging rules."
If passed by the Senate, this
bill will change the section of a
1984 act which created these
stringent regulations. "The pre-
sent law has been particularly
threatening to businessmen and
flHhets in rural areas who rely
heavily on trucks and cars to
conduct their daily business,”
Sweeney said.
The momentum behind this
legislation began at the start of
the current session of Congress.
Various bills were introduced to
revise the existing IRS require-
ments on business vehicle rec-
ord-keeping. H.R. 1869 provides
for the same modifications of the
Internal Revene Code as does
H.R. 813, a bill cosponsored by
Congressman Sweeney earlier
this year.
"Government regulation shou-
ld not impair an individual’s
ability to do business,” Sweeney
explained. "Certainly, we need
to reform America’s tax laws, but
expensive and time consuming
requirements are not a realistic
solution.”
