1987 BagFest Activities Listing
[The following is a list of information on the major activities and
events scheduled for the 9th Annual Palacios BayFest to be held
this Saturday in South Bay Park-Pavilion area. For most
competitive events, advance entry forms are available from event
directors/sponsors or at the Palacios Area Fund Office [5th &
Commerce]. Entry forms for certain events may also be obtained
on the day of the event.
This should not be considered a complete list of activities, only
those that had information available as of press time. Times may
be subject to change.
6:30 a.m. BAYFEST 3-MILE WALK: Sponsored by Palacios
Softball Assoc., Joyce Harvey director. Entry fee $5 with check-in
time 6-6:30 a.m. at Children’s Theater. Walk starts 6:30 a.m.
Awards for lst-3rd places in male & female divisions of the
following age groups: 13-under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49,
50-over.
7:30 a.m. 3-MILE, 10-K RUNS: Sponsored by Palacios Softball
Assoc., Joyce Harvey director. Advance entry fee S5, day of race
$7. Check-in time 6:30-7 a.m. at Children's Theater. Race starts
7:30 a.m. Free t-shirts to first 30 entrants. Medals to top three
finishers in age groups 13-under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and
SO-over. Portion of race proceeds benefit Muscular Dystrophy.
8:30 a.m. 3-MILE BIKE RACE: Sponsored by Palacios Softball
Assoc., Joyce Harvey director. Entry fee $5. Starts near Children’s
Theater. Medals to top three finishers of male and female divisions
of the following age groups: male 13-under, male 14-over, female
13-under, female 14-over.
10 a.m. DOUBLES HORSESHOE TOURNEY: Sponsored by
Palacios Softball Assoc., Joyce Harvey director. Entry fee $10 per
team. Women s Doubles start 10 a.m.. Men's Doubles 12 noon,
Mixed Doubles 2 p.m. Medals to top three teams in each division.
10:30 a.m. SPINNING & WOOL DYEING: Demonstration given
by Nelda Fay Wagner of El Campo in booth on Pavilion pier.
10:45 a.m. VIETNAMESE LION DANCE: Symbolic dance with
authentic costumes will wind through the park area wishing
merchants good luck and good fortune.
11 a.m. KIDDIE PARADE: Lisa Lee director. For children
12-under. Entry fee $1 with check-in time at 10:30 a.m. at
Children's Theater. Parade starts 11 a.m. and concludes at end of
Pavilion. Prizes for the best in the following categories: boys
bought costume, boys homemade costume, girls bought costume,
girls homemade costume, smallest pet, largest pet, most unusual
pet, best dressed pet. (Children must be accompanied by an adult
and pets must be on leash)
11:30 a.m. ALABAMA-COUSHATTA INDIANS: Featured in
their native dress, the dancers will perform on the pavilion from
11:30-12 noon.
12 noon JAZZERCISE: Exercise routines staged in Children’s
Theater which are as much fun to do as they are to watch.
12:15 p.m. GUMBO COOKOFF JUDGING: Sponsored by
Catholic Daughters. Judging in cookoff area with trophies for
lst-3rd. Judges are Pete Barber and John Stephens (Bama
Seafood), Wesley Harvorth (Ocean Inn, Port Lavaca), Dorothy
Peacock (Miz-B’s Galley, Matagorda)
12:30 p.m. BASKET WEAVING DEMONSTRATION- techni-
ques and displays shown by Robert Davila of Palacios in booth on

Two performances of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian dancers are
scheduled at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the Pavilion._
a refreshing drink while listening to the music of Esther Smith,
Bob Varnes and others throughout the day.
10 a.m. CRUISE SHIP ACTIVITIES: continues until 6 p.m. at
tennis courts on west end of park. Games for youths 9-18 costing 25
to 50-cents. Prizes for all winners. 7th grade girls vs challengers in
volleyball at 11 a.m. 8th grade girls vs challengers at 12 noon. Hula
hoop and limbo contests at 3 p.m.
10:30 a.m. CHILDREN’S THEATER: Scheduled during the day
are performances by PHS varsity and JV cheerleaders, storybook
time with Colleen Claybourn and performance of Junior
Historians.
10:30 a.m. BINGO: Sponsored by Palacios Lions Club in large
famifv picnic shelter on east side of park.

12:30 p.m. EL CAMPO THESPIANS: members of El Campo HS
Speech & Drama Club perform in Children’s Theater.
1 p.m. “WIZARD OF NO”: Sponsored by Palacios Chapter of
Texans War on Drugs and Alpha Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
20-minue film in Children's Theater concerning saying “no” to
drugs.
1:30 p.m. MEXICAN FOLKLORICO BALLET: Members of Our
Lady of Sorrows Church CYO in Victoria perform traditional
Mexican dances on Pavilion complete with elaborate re-creations
of native costumes. _
1:30 p.m. CAKE DECORATING DEMONSTRATION: Conduct-
ed by Helen Daly in Museum area, 4th & Commerce. Includes
flower arrangement demonstration.
2 p.m. BBQ COOKOFF JUDGING: Sponsored by Fraternal
Order of Eagles. Entry fee $25 per team. Trophies to top three
teams along with longest traveled and showmanship. Judges are
David Hooper- (CPL-STP), Ann Kornegay (Cong, Sweeney’s
office/, Henry Wolfe (Victoria Advocate), Cindy Conn (KIOX
Radio) and Bob Nason (KXGC Radio)
2 p.m. MIXED DOUBLES HORSESHOES: (See previous listing)

Cake decorating techniques and flower arrangement skills will be
demonstrated by Helen Daly near the Museum building at 1:30
p.m.
10 a.m. SILENT AUCTION: Sponsored by BayFest Committee,
Sherri Van Cleave director. Write down your bid on any of the
items on sale and wait for the results later in the day.
10 a.m. CELEBRITY CHALLENGE MILE RUN: Sponsored by
Harmonie Club. Advance entry forms at Bay City Federal and at
start of race. Collect pledges or enter on your own for $5. Those
with pledges over $20 receive a BayFest Koozie, those over $35
receive BayFest Koozie and cap. Largest pledge getter receives
Koozie, Cap and Game of Palacios. Medals for top three in the
following age groups: 0-13, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-over.
Harmonie Club issuing special challenge to all other Palacios
clubs.
10 a.m. PHS PEP SQUAD: performances tMi the Pavilion.
10 a.m. HAND & MACHINE KNITTING DEMONSTRATION:
by Mary Johnston at PAHA Museum (4th & Commerce)
10 a.m. BEERGARTEN/ENTERTAINMENT: Relax and enjoy
Anna Baltar. renowned Palacios qullter will be among throw having
exhibits at the Quilt Show located In the Museum, 4th and
Commerce from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mary Johnston will also hula a
hand and machine knitting demonstration at 10 a.m.
