of Palacios’ multi-million dol-
lar Turning Basin No. 3.

remarks by officials of Naviga-
tion District No. 1 were
followed by a seafood meal at
the Palacios Recreation Cen-
ter. The new turning basin was
approved by district voters in a
$5-million bond issue in 1982.

Communities represented
atAFS district conference
The Palacios Chapter of AFS/
International-Intercultural held
its district conference Nov. 3-5 at
the Texas Baptist Encampment.
Six communities involved in
AFS programs were involved and
six foreign students from these
communities participated. They
included Jenny Thurnbull from
Essex. England who is spending
a year in Port Lavaca in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Flour-
noy; Jeni Goetsche from Joh-
annesburg, South Africa who is
spending the year in George
West in the home of Mr. and
Mrs Hal Moffatt; Witn Twisk
from Bakkum, Netherlands who
is spending the year in Aust-
well-Tivoli in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Hohnson; Rowan
Churchill from Brisbane, Austra-
lia who is spending the year in
Palacios in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Anthony; Ines Joer-
dens from Sykes, West Germany
who is spending the year in
Beeville in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne Simpkins and Sally
Taylor from Hamilton, New
Zealand who is spending the year
in Victoria in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Kent Gerhardt.
Palacios Chapter President
Margaret McElrath participated
in the meetings and workshops to
strengthen the local chapter, ihe
purpose of the local chapter is to
support the foreign students and
host families, to recruit students
and families to benefit from the
AFS experience, to provide en-
richment activities for students,
families, the schools and the
community and train new officers
to maintain a strong organiza-
tion.
AFS was established by vol-
unteer ambulance drivers as a
youth exchange program in 1947
following the devastation of
World Warll.
Founded originally in 1914
as the American Fluid Service as
a volunteer ambulance corps with
the French armies, AFS has
retained the concept of volun-
teerism throughout its history.
When the AFS ambulance drjv-
ers from the First and Second
World Wars decided in 1947 :fo
re-establish a youth exchange
program, 52 students from 11
countries were brought to the
United States. In the last 35 years
over 125,000 students have lived
with host families in over 80
countries around the world.

Pro-Life Committee
meeting Thursday
A meeting of the Palacios
Pro-Life Committee will be held
Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the
Palacios Library. Diane Sarver,
president of the Victoria Life and
Family Advocates, will be the
guest speaker.
A film presentation will be
given, along with a discussion of
abortion and other related topics.

those who wish additional infor-
Operation
Santa Claus
gears-up
Plans are underway at City
Hall and the Palacios Area Fund
office for the third annual
Operation Santa Claus. The
distribution date has been set for
Tuesday, Dec. 18 from City Hall.
Once again, churches and civic
groups are urged to make dona-
tions of food and toys to help
brighten the season for those in
the community that are less
fortunate.
Ministers and public agencies
are invited to submit names of
families that they consider elig-
ible to receive aid through Oper-
ation Santa Claus. Families can-
not call City Hall or Palacios Area
Fund and place themselves on
the recipient list. Their names
must be submitted by a minister
or a public agency.
Last year, through the gener-
osity of the community, over 90
families benefitted.
Operation Santa Claus is a
volunteer effort that involves all
areas of the community.
Persons who would like to
volunteer time, food or toys to
Operation Santa Claus should
contact Mary Eggcmcycr at
972-3960 or Mayor Leonard Lam-
ar at 972-2414.
Prop Busters meet
on 2nd Thursdays
The Gulf Coast Prop Bust-
ers, a recreational aircraft
hobby club, has monthly
meetings every second Thurs-
day of each month at J&S
Body Shop at 7:30 p.nt. New
