Matagorda General Hospital
will offer an Ostomy Care Day
June 24 to provide the latest
information on techniques, eq-
uipment and services to ostomy
patients and their families.
An ostomy is a temporary or
permanent opening of the colon
through the abdominal wall,
explains Mary Helen Nelson,
MGH director of inservice edu-
cation and coordinator of the
upcoming workshop. The reason
for such a procedure is a dis-
eased or injured colon, with coion
cancer the leading cause, she
adds.
MGH’s Ostomy Care Day is
scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon
and 2-6 p.m. in the Taylor
Conference Room at Matagorda
General Hospital, 1115 Ave. G,
Bay City. This information day is
open to any interested person at
no charge. Participants may
attend all day or on a drop-in
basis.
Available for the day's pre-
sentations as well as for indi-
vidual consultation will be Sandy
Worley of the Hollister company
and Virginia McElvain of Con-
vatec, two companies providing
supplies for ostomy care. Both
Worley and McElvain are ostomy
therapists.
Shirley Murphy, an RN and
Certified Enterostomal Therapist
from Houston, will act as hos-
tess. "Shirley brings a wealth of
experience and practical sugges-
tions in the day-to-day hurdles
ostomy patients must surpass,”
says Nelson. “Yes, they can be
overcomel"
Nelson promises the represen-
tatives will be available to answer
questions or help with skin or
ostomy care problems.
“On the other hand,” she
says, “even if you are not having
any particular difficulties at this
time, please try to join us
anyway. There might be a sugg-
estion or two which could prove
useful to you in your daily
routines. Also, we would wel-
come any ideas or ‘tips’ you’d be
willing to share with usl We can
all learn from each other.”
