Safely Education
In Texas Goes To
School This Month
AUSTIN.—Safety education in
Texas is (joint; to college this month*
under u seminar for college pro-
fessors of teacher-preparing insti-
tutions.
The seminar will he held May 17-
21 at the Crozier Technical High
School of Dallas, under the auspices
of the Association of Texas Col-
leges and the State Department of
Education.
Cooperating organizations will be
the New York University Center
for Safety Education, the Nationul
Comimssion on Safety Education of
the National Education Association,
the Tcxus Department of Public
Safety, the Texas Safety Associa-
tion, and National Safety Council.
It is designed to provide basic
materials and methods in general
safety education, traffic education,
driver education and behind-the-
wheel driver training. Its purpose
is to prepare college instructors in
the teaching of these courses to
high school and elementary teach-
ers.
Expenses of the five-day seminar,
including those of the college repre-
sentatives, will be underwritten by
the Texas Safety Association.
The project is part of the Action
Program for Traffic Control adopt-
ed at the Governor's Highway Safe-
ty Conference last March which em-
phasized the need for qualified
teachers in safety education.
“The demand for trained safety
education teachers in Texas is fast
exceeding the supply,” said R. P.
Roaper, Houston, vice president
for School Safety, Texas Safety
Association.
“This year more than 400 high
schools are teaching safety and
driver education courses to some
40,000 Texas youth. A considerable
increase is expected next September
particularly in the field of behind-
the-wheel instruction.
"Under a plan of the Automobile
Dealers of Texas, the State Depart-
ment of Education, and the Texas
Safety Association, dual-equipped
training cars will be made available
to schools having qualified instruc-
tors.
“Classroom and behi.nd-the-whcel
training is the most effective meth-
od of assuring our state of better
drivers. High school trained teen-
age drivers are involved in only
50 percent as many traffice acci*

; dents as the uritrained.”
Stressing the importance of
I teaching safety to children by
• elementary teachers, Roaper cited
the following national accident fig-
ures:
1. The number of elementary
school accidentally killed one year
| would fill 205 classrooms of average
enrollment.
2. Accidents kill one out of three
j school age children who die.
3. In an average year, 22 times
many children of elementary
school age are killed in accidents
as die from infantile paralysis.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Methodist Church
Lawrence M. Greenhaw, Pastor
I lllock from High School
The colored pictures op the screen
on next Sunday evening at 8 o’clock
will demonstrate that Missionaries
are normal and very human people.
The pictures will be in the form of
actual photographs of the Flying
Missionaries of Mexico, showing
towns in Southern Mexico around
the Volcano of Parlcutin, the town
of Ocosino, Tuxtla Gutierrez, land-
ing strips, and the maintenance
problems of straining gasoline
through chamois, mountainous und
river terrain to test their metal.
Even ambulance planes are used.
The pilots all are ex-G.I. pilots,
young and trim of figure and very,
very aware of the importance of
the work they are doing in trans
porting Missionaries from Jungle
camp to Jungle camp and in main
taining supply lines for them.
The Parsonage is nearing com
pletion now and soon will be occu-
pied to the delight and enjoyment
of the pastor and his family.
We really appreciated those large
congregations on last Sunday. Keep
up that kind of attendance and the
wonderful spirit of this Grand Old
Church will be maintained indefin-
itely.

Sunday will be a day of honor
for our Christian Homes and for
the babies of our Sunday School
and Church. We are to honor the
Cradle Roll of our Sunday School
Sunday morning at opening of the
morning worship service. We want
to have as many of our Cradle Roll
children and their mothers present
as possible.
At the morning worship service,
we are to honor the mother with
the largest family present and the
mother with the youngest baby
present. We want you to come and
be in the services Sunday as we
honor our mothers. Surely there
would not be anything that would
make your mother happier than to
know that you were at church on
the day set aside to honor her.
The Vacation Bible School at the
First Baptist Church is to begin on
Monday May 31 and run to June 11
We want all the boys and girls of
the ages 4-16 to come and be in

some very fine workers to lead in
the school and you will find you
will enjoy Vacation Bible School so
come and be with us.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICES
Christian Science service will ba
held at 10 o’clock Sunday morning
at 605 First Street. The public is
cordially invited to attend.
“Adam and Fallen Man” is the
subject of the Lesson - Sermon
which will be read in all Churches
of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday,
May 9.
The Golden Text is: “If thou re-
turn to the Almighty, thou shalt be
built up, thou shalt put away iniqui-
ty far from thy tabernacles” (Job
22:23).
Among the citations which com-
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the fol-
lowing from the Bible: “Cease ye
from man whose breath is in his
nostril: for wherein is he to be
accounted of?” (Isaiah 2:22).
The Lesson-Sermon also includes
the following passage from the
Christian Science textbook, “Science
and Health with Key to the Scrip-
tures” by Mary Baker Eddy: “Man
reflects God; mankind represents
the Adamic race, and is a human,
not a divine, creation” (page 525).

LESTER'S GESTURES . . .
Man is the only animal that blushes, or has need to.
Most things a fellow waits for are not worth
the delay.
After all is said and done, we keep on saying and
doing. Like saying Gulf gasoline is the best and
filling up every time we want to make a trip, whether
to go to a ball game or on a business venture.
The fellow who used to walk a barbed wire fence
barefooted, with a wildcat under each arm, is now
married to a little red-headed woman who makes
him do the dishes three times a day.
