Q. I am a young widow and
the mother of two small children,
age 4 and 6. Now I am
considering remarriage and
would like to know how this will
affect the Social Security benefits
my children are receiving my On
deceased hies bands work record?
A. Although your benefits as
a surviving spouse will end
when you remarry, your children
will continue to receive benefits
until they reach 18, or 19 if they
arc a full time high school stu-
dents and remain unmarried.
Q. My father worked for the
rail road for about 5 years before
starting his own business. Last
year, he died at age 60. My
mother is wondering what will
happen to those 5 years of earn-
ings in railroad employment.
Will they increase the benefits
she will receive as his widow
when she becomes eligible?
A. Since your father had less
than 120 months of railroad em-
ployment, his railroad work
credit will be transferred to the
Social Security Administration
and combined with the credit he
earned under Social Security in
order calculate your survivors
benefits as his widow.

Q. A number of my friends
have had outpatient cosmetic
surgery. I've been considering
it, too. Would my Medicare
coverage pay the doctor's fee for
the surgery?,
t .A. Medicare can pay for cos-
metic surgery only if it is needed
because of accidental injury or to
improve the function of a mal-
formed part of the body. Medi-
care cannot pay for elective cos-
metic surgery.
Q. Is there a toll free number I
can use to contact Social Secu-

A. Yes, Social Security’s new
toll free number is 1-800-234-

Q. If I begin my Social Secu-
rity retirement benefits at age 62,
with a 20% percent reduction,
will the checks go up at age 65?
A. No, they won’t. Once you
take a reduction in your benefits,
they stay reduced permanently.
The only exception to this rule
would be if your benefits were
slopped before you turned 65
because of your return to work.
