Sales tax rebates show drop,
but remain above 1986 level
Although still above last
year’s pace, the City of Palacios
reported a slight drop in its
rebate check of the city’s
one-percent sales tax.
The August rebate check to
the city issued by the State
Comptroller’s Office amounted
to $19,010.58, down from the
$19,573.78 the city received for
the same time last year. The

total for this year to $91,291.32.
That total for 1987 represents
a 4.03% increase over the
amount of rebates the city had
received for the same period of
months last year. However, it
was a slight decline from the 6-7
percent growth pace the city
had been recording for most of
this year.
The one-percent sales tax is
collected by merchants along
with the state sales tax. The tax
is turned in monthly to the State
Comptroller’s Office which in
turn rebates the local tax back
to the municipality in which it
was collected.
The August checks represent
taxes collected on sales in June
and during the second quarter
and reported to the Comptroller
by July 20th.
The four-percent gain for
Palacios over the previous year
is still far ahead of the statewide
average. According to Comp-
