organization and are on their
own. Two years ago your writer
had the pleasure to hearing the
main instigator of their senior
project, a retired Methodist
minister, tell of the beginning of
a foundation project to help in the
Center’s support. Though he has
since died, the Center is a
constant reminder of his commit-
ment and dedication. This year I

Gideon hosts social
The Athena Club began the
1987-88 year with a fall social at
the home of Grace Gideon on
Sept. 8. After a moment of
meditation by Lorene Treacy, a
beautiful luncheon was served by
the foil social committee; besides
Grace and Lorene, the committee
was Euth Partain, Miriam Falks
and Mary Friety.
The first regular meeting was
held on Sept. 21 in the Athena
Room of the public library. A
moment of meditation was by
Mary Friery.
A leave of absence was grant-
ed to Virginia Wilke until Thank-
sgiving. Virginia’s resignation as
secretary was accepted.
Letters of thanks were read for
donations goven to American
Field Service and Palacios Area
Fund.
Under new business the club
voted to donate $20 to the
veterans’ memorial being erect-
ed in Bay City, and $50 to the
library for use of the Athena
Room.
Mary Griffin announced a quilt
show being held in the Historical
Museum and a trash and treas-
ure sale, all during BayFest.
Mary Friery and Mary Griffin
gave the program entitled, “In-
dians of Texas”.
The meeting adjourned with

introduce these home bound par-
ticipants to the benefits of being
with other seniors and joining in
Senior Center activities. New
participant, will be especially
recognized also on Oct. 13 “New
participant day”. Of course every
week day is a new participant
day. We like to keep encouraging
those who hesitate for whatever
reason to come to the Center.
We’ve the joy of those who have
finally come and stayed.
Our thanks to Doug DeVries of
the Social Security office. This
delightful young man comes
host breakfast
confer on a one-to-one basis. This
is just one of the regular benefits
the Center offers. Doug joins us
all for dinner at noon and takes a
personal interest in everyone.
Our great appreciation again to
the Houston Eye Clinic. The
screening was well attended, as
usual, and continued until 2:30.
Most noon meal conversation
these days consists of “how is
your eye doing? Can you see
yet?” The clinic wiii return again
in six months.
“Single senior on the road”
been raised. The goal for the
foundation is $200,000 and
$100,000 had now been raised
over a period of two years.
Participants have suppers from
time to time to raise money for
this goal.
Appreciation goes this week
to: County 4-H clubs for donated
food from their banquet through
the kindness of Kay Anders. The
food was delicious. Also, to Joan
Benge, donation of new Center
photo album; Marsha! Bristcr
and Ella Mae Sallas, 1 lb. of
coffee each.

Caring at Wagner General
Hospital is demonstrated by a
new community service recently
started that involves the city and
county law enforcement officers,
the Palacios Volunteer Fire De-
partment, and the ministers in
the Palacios area.
Communications specialists at
Wagner General are now the
focal point when a personal or
public disaster occurs; whether it
is a death in a family, a house fire
or any of a great number of tragic
happenings. The communica-
tions person receiving the call
contacts the necessary persons or
sgencies to provide that much
needed help.
The local Ministerial Alliance
has put its members on call to
support our citizens in crisis
situations. They carry beepers
and are notified of those in need
by WGH communications per-
sons.
