Coast Guard searches
for missing fishermen
The Coast Guard continued its
search Tuesday for three Mata-
gorda County men missing in the
Gulf of Mexico since Sunday.
According to Coast Guard
spokesman CM-1 Michael Claeys
in Corpus Christi, the names of
the three men, all in their 20s,
are being withheld pending the
outcome of the search.
The trio had set out from
Matagorda around 7 a.m. Sun-
day. They were reported missing
by a relative at 7:26 p.m. that
day.
Claeys said the Coast Guard
had found the 18-foot Glastron
boat the men wqr^in capsized in
two feet of water along the shore
at Pass Cavallo at 3:15 Monday.
Also found 200-yards away were
a life jacket, a jacket and two seat
cushions from the boat.
Claeys said two Coast Guard
helicopters, two cutters and a
Coast Guard jet have been used
in the search which has ranged
from the Colorado River to Port
Aransas and up to 20 miles

Sales and gas taxes ^
Texans face higher tax
Palacios consumers, as well as
all other Texans, will find them-
selves paying more taxes at fuel
pumps and store counters be-
ginning New Year’s Day-Jan. 1,
1987-when an increase in both
the state sales tax and motor
fuels tax goes into effect.
The state sales tax, which is
applied to the purchase price of
almost everything, will increase
from 4.125 to 5.25 cents per
dollar beginning Thursday, Jan.
1.
In Palacios, as well as other
municipalities which levy the
one-cent city sales tax, the total
sales tax will increase to 6.25-
cents per dollar.
According to State Comptroller
Bob Bullock, only the rate has
changed.
“In every case, what is and
what is not taxable under current
sales tax law remains the same
when the new law goes into effect
Jan. 1,” reminded Bullock.
A special session of the Texas
Legislature raised the state's
sales tax rate One and one- eighth
percent to deal with a shortfall of
tax revenue caused by .the
collapse of oil prices. ' i
In making the accounting
changes to collect the new tax
rate, businesses should have
adjusted cash registers and aler-
ted and trained their personnel to
collect sales tax at the new local
rates.
A brand new year! That’s cause
for celebration! Here’s hoping It brings
you happiness and good fortune!

The added sales tax is schedu-
led to expire on Aug. 31, 1987 at
the end of the state’s fiscal year,
however the Legislature could
vote for an extension.
The new law also raised the
motor fuels tax 5 cents-from 10
cents to 15 cents a gallon.
“My office has contacted tax-
payers and sent new rate cards
, gnd updated Information on
these^tate tax changes,” Bullock
said.
The increase in the state sales
tax will put Texas in ninth place
nationally on the amount of sales
tax levicd-up 18 places from its
current ranking of 27th. Texas’
new gasoline tax fate wifi be ine
13th highest in the nation.
