there was a lack of ethnic
culture and a racial imbalance
in the school district. Prior to
the Tuesday meeting the Edna
I.S.D. Board has been accused
of racial discrimination in
policies involving classroom
distribution, teachers and

Concern over major recom-

advisory commission relating
to the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service was voiced
at Jackson County Commis-
sioners Court at a meeting of
that body Monday morning.
The court agreed that the
Extension Service has playtfl
an important role in Jackson
County and they would not
relish a change in the
program. Concern was also
voiced over the fact that the
Extension program as it exists
today in Jackson County may
be deleted if these recommen-
dations were approved.

L, B. (Bert) Miller of the
Sealand Products Company in
Palacios has returned home
after attending the annual
convention of the Texas Oil
Marketers Association in San
Antonio.
He reported that major
discussions at the convention
centered on price control,
government over-regulation of
the oil industry and unreason-
able gasoline vapor control
rules.
A near-record crowd of
nearly 1,200 oil jobbers,
petroleum products market-
ers, commissioned agents and
suppliers were on hand.
Palacios receives
$1,769.95 rebate
Comptroller Bob Bullock
mailed checks totaling Sl.,9
million to 516 cities and towns
Thursday as payment for their
April city sales tax rebates.
The City of Palacios received
$1,769.95.
Bullock said he has remitted
$87.4 million to the 845 muni-
cipalities collecting the one-
cent sales tax so far this year,
compared to $80.4 million
remitted during the same pe-
riod last year.
“Both city and state tax
collections are growing far
faster than inflation alone,"
the Comptroller said.
He noted that 1975 city sales
tax collections totaled $263.9
million, nearly 10 percent
more than the $240.8 million
collected in 1974; and state
sales tax collections in 1975
totaled $1,266 billion, 12.5
percent more than the $1,126
billion collected in 1974.
Bullock attributed the
increases mainly to increased
consumer spending and
improved collection proced-
ures by the Comptroller’s Of-
fice.
“Because tax collections
are running so high, I’ve been
able to project that state
government can easily get by
another two years without a
tax increase,” he said. "And
with careful planning, we
might be able to avoid new
taxes for years to come.”
