Parishioners make pilgrimage
to papal Mass in San Antonio
Two Members of St. Anthony's
Catholic Church will have memo-
ries that will last a lifetime after
having been among the select
few to receive communion at the
altar from Pope John Paul II
during his historic trip to San
Antonio last Sunday.
Yen Nguyen Tran, a young
teacher’s aide at Central Elemen-
tary, and husband, Thuc, were
chosen to represent St. An-
thony’s and the Victoria diocese
during the communion which
took place at the open-air papal
Mass site attended by over
300.000 worshioers.
The two were in addition to the
42 people of various ethnic
groups from St. Anthony's that
took part in the pilgrimage
along with Father Gerry Cernoch
to see the pontiff.
While the thousands of faithful
attending the Mass were admin-
istered the communion by hun-
dreds of priests and nuns, Yen
and Thuc joined a procession of a
select few in climbing the
pyramid shaped platform to
receive their communion at the
altar from Pope John Paul II. The
event was telecast live to millions
of people throughout the country.
According to Delores Wallis,
the pilgrimage to see the Pope
was definitely a once in a
lifetime experience” for all the
members of St. Anthony’s con-
gregation.
Wallis said that Father Cer-
noch truly fulfilled his role as a
“shepard” as he patiently tend-
ed to his “flock" throughout the
entire trip.
The trip was not without its
share of problems, however.
After boarding a bus in Palacios
around 4 a.m. Sunday, the
pilgrims traveled to Port Lavaca
where they joined a caravan of
three Other busses bound for San
Antonio. Arriving early in the
morning, the 43 faithful joined
the hundreds of thousands of
other worshippers in walking the
mile distance from the parking
area to the 144-acre Mass site.
“It was so hot and that had to
be the longest mile most of us
have ever walked,” remarked
Wallis. Following the Mass,
Wallis said Rev. Cemoch really
put his sheparding skills to work
as he had to track down four
members of his flock who got lost
in the crowd of people.
Despite the sweltering tem-
peratures, a bus breakdown on
the return home and a minor
accident, Wallis said the pijj '
grimage was nevertheless .an .
inspirational event that they will
treasure forever.
