Shark rally results in season’s third tie
The mosquitoes won and the
Sharks and Bluejays tied. That
was the outcome of last Friday’s
gridiron contest where nature
held the upper hand.
Taking advantage of the brave
fans who battled flooded roads to
reach the game* the pesky,
aggressive mosquitoes had a
field day as they claimed their
victory in the stands. Meanwhile
down on the sluggish, muddy
field, neither the Sharks nor
Bluejays could put their first
district win away.
Although each team had the
opportunity to do so, the end
result was a 6-6 deadlock.
Ties have been just as common
as victories for the Sharks this
season. Fortunately they have
also been more plentiful than
losses. The no-win, no-loss out-
come was also a familiar face to
the Bluejays. For Palacios it was
the third tie of the year, putting
the club at 3-1 -3 overall and 0-1-1
in league play. Needville, which
had come into the game off of a
tie against Boling the previous
week, ;.ow stands at 3-2-2 on the
year and 0-0-2 in district action.
Hoping to break into the
district win column, c.o ch Pat

cock Friday for a 7:30 p.m.
kickoff. Hitchcock, victorious on-
ly once this season in seven
outings, was rocked by Boling
last week 28-8.
Rallying back from a 6-0
deficit, the Sharks, who saw a
touchdown nullified by a penalty
earlier, managed to get on the
board in the closing minutes of
the game. The 10-yard TD pass
from Tracy Hooker to Oscar Giles
evened the contest at 6-6. The
Bluejays. however, shut the door
on a Shark victory by blocking the
decisive point-after attempt by
Rodney Solis.
Needville gave its homecoming
crowd something to cheer about
in the first quarter by mounting a
successful 66-yard, 10-play scor-
ing drive. Running back Anthony
Brown got the attack off to a big
start by taking the call on the
opening play and galloping 25-
yards to the Palacios 41. From
there Stephen Stavinoha carried
on the next four plays to move
the pigskin to the 16. Two calls
later, facing fourth and four,
Bluejay slit end Willie Mayberry
hooked up with a nine-yard pass
over the middle for tire touch-
down. Needville’s attempt for the
two-point conversion failed, leav-
ing the score 6-0.
The Sharks gained good field
position later in the period thanks
to its always alert defense. Mark
Latapie set Palacios up by
snatching a Needville fumble out
of mid-air at the Palacios 47. The
Shark assault received a tempo-
rary setback two plays later when
Hooker was sacked for an 8-vard.
loss by Joe Brown at the Palacios
43.
The resulting punt turned out
to be the biggest ground gainer
of the night for the Sharks when
the Bluejays fumbled the recep-
tion at their own 22. Given new
life, Palacios appeared to be on
the verge of overtaking its host.
In three plays the Sharks had
reached the nine. On his third
consecutive carry, Alfred Apari-
cio punched his way across the
goal line. However the score
failed to stand up when the
Sharks were flagged for holding.
Penalized back to the 14, the
red-and-white were unable to
recoup the score.
The Bluejays were also denied
the endzone in the third quarter.
The refusal came not on a
penalty, but via the Shark
defense.
Needville had opened the
second half with a strong drive
that moved the ball from their
own 34 to the Palacios 18. There
it died when Darryl Bordovsky
Tigers tumbled 33-7
A muddy field became quick-
sand for the Tidehaven Tigers as
they were buried by the East
Bernard Brahmas Friday 33-7.
The contest which saw the
Tigers limited to just 66-yards
total offense and no first downs,
dropped Tidehaven to 3-3-1
overall and 1-1 in District 28-A A
play. The unbeaten Brahmas are
currently 7-0 on the year and 2-0
in league action.
After a scoreless first period,
the Brahmas got on the board in
the second with Bankston’s one-
yard effort. A 52-yard pass from
Rodney Hayes to Vance Hayes
increased the lead to 12-0 at the
half.
Two more Brahma scores came
in the third quarter. The first on
a 65-yard punt return by Chris
Moore and the second on Bank
ston’s 24-yard run that capped a
92-yard drive.
Tidehaven recorded its only
touchdown in between the two
Brahma tallies. The Tigers'
Kevin Wilson rushed in to block a
punt with Herman Cruz scooping
the pigskin up and racing 35-
yards into the endzone. The extra
point kick by James Krenek put
seven points on the Tiger scores
pounced on a fumble. Early in
the fourth quarter, the Shark
defense applied the brakes to
Needville once again. This time it
was on downs as Palacios halted
the attack at their own 24.
Later in the period, the Sharks
finally capitalized on a Bluejay
mistake. A fake punt attempt
backfired when the Sharks down-
ed the ballcarrier at the Needville
43. Relying on the passing game,
Hooker drove the Sharks down to
the 23 where he then hit Dailey at
the 10. On the next play, Giles
was on the receiving end inside
the goal line to knot the score.
The Bluejiys’ Mayberry prevent-
ed the Sharks from taking the win
by blocking the point-after at-
tempt.
In other District 22-AAA con-
tests, Sweeny gained sole owner-
ship of the league lead by
disposing of archrival Van Vleck
25-16. The Bulldogs utilized the
running of Jay Pyssen to produce
three touchdowns of 5, 3 and 2
yards. The fullback also generat-
ed 102 yards on 25 carries. The
remaining Sweeny tally came on
a two yard effort by Brett
Simpson.
The Leopards got on the board
when Robert Blackmon blocked a
Bulldog punt and returned it 25
yards. Craig Kucera connected
with Lawrence Cockrell for a
70-yaid touchdown puss.
Jerry Waddy also produced a
trio of touchdowns to pace Boling
to its 28-8 win over Hitchcock.
Gaining a 132 yards on the night,
Waddy scored on runs of 83, 3
and 21 yards. A nine-yard run by
Terry Smith accounted for the
only Hitchcock touchdown.

decisions
The Palacios Junior High
Sandsharks broke even in their
encounter with Needville last
week. The 8th grade Sandsharks
won their matchup by blanking
the Bluejays 12-0 while the 7th
grade was dealt a 20-6 setback.
The win for the 8th grade kept
its unbeaten streak alive at 7-0.
Robert Slaughter punched a-
cross a one-yard score with Nghi
Le adding an eight-yard touch-
down.
The loss for the 7th grade
dropped that team to 2-1 on the
year. Leon Giles recorded the
only Palacios score of the game
with a 12-yard scoring run.
