Man and Woman of the Year
Trull, Shimek win
Chamber awards
MARVIN ZINDLER, center, congratulates the
recipients of 1982’s Man and Woman of the Year
Awards following Saturday’s annual Chamber of
Commerce Banquet. Bob Trull, left, who Zindler

One of the largest crowds in
recent years was on hand at the
Palacios Chamber of Commerce
Banquet Saturday night in the
Recreation Renter to see R. E.
“Bob" Trul named Man of the
Year and Theresa Shimek named
Woman of the Year.
The two recepients. whose ident-
ities had been kept secret until the
official announcement, were pre-
sented their plaques to standing
ovations. Dr. E. B. Sanford, last
year’s winner of the Man of the
Year Award, made the 1982
presentation to Trull. Filling in for
Marv King. Chamber president
Margaret McElrath bestowed the
Woman of the Year for 1982 honor
on Mrs. Shimek.
Mrs. McElrath also presented
the 1981 Chamber president. Dale
Porter, with a plaque in commemo-
ration of his tenure in office.
Marvin Zindler. investigative
reporter for KTRK Ch. I3's
Evewittncss News, was guest
speaker for the occassion. Zindler,
who was kept busy during the
earlier part of the banquet signing
autographs, spoke on the power of
television in helping to problems
solved.
The evening opened with a
Hospitality Hour featuring compli-
mentary wine and cheese with
background music provided by
"Spare Time". That was followed
by the banquet meal furnished by
Mikeska Catering of El Campo.
The Ladies Chamber of Commerce
provided a variety of desserts.
In making his presentation to
Trull as Man of the Year, Dr.
Sanford delivered the following
speech:
"Our Man of the Year for 1982 is
a Texan through and through. He
was born in Matagorda County,
finished high school in Palacios.
married a Mkfagorda County na-
tive and has a son and daughter
who are also natives of Matagorda
County, plus two grandchildren.
"He did. however, work a few
years out of state following his
graduation from the University of
Texas where he waited tables to
help on his expenses. Uncle Sam
claimed some time during World
War II where he served in the Air
Corps, both in the states and
overseas in the European sector.
"Following the war. he returned
to Palacios to assist his ailing
father. He has served his Church,
and others, giving freely of his time
and money.
"He has been active in civic,
medical, educational and elderly
programs in our community from
which many of our people have
benetitted through his genoristy.
"It is mv pleasure to present my

County, state elections Saturday
All qualified, registered voters in
Matagorda County will be given
the opportunity to go to the polls
Saturday to cast their ballots in an
array of county and statewide
primary elections.
Balloting in the Democratic
primary will be held at the County
Annex on Commerce Street for
those residing in Precincts 3A. Pet.
3B voters will vote at the Palacios
High School with those living in
Pet. 4 casting ballots at the
Blessing Fire Station. Collegeport
Area Happening.^
Blessing PTC
sets Bake Sale
The Blessing PTC (Parent-
Teacher Club) will hold a bake
sale Saturday in front of the
Blessing Saddlery from 8
a.m.-4 p.m. Everyone is en-
couraged to stop by and
support this project.
Little League
BBQ Saturday
The Palacios Little League
Association will sponsor an
"Election Day Barbecue” at
the tire station on Commerce
Street. The meals will be
served starting at 11 a.m. with
prices at $3.75 per plate.
Blessing Day BBQ
11:30 a.m. Sunday
The annual Blessing Day
Bar-B-0 will be held Sunday
at the Community Center in
downtown Blessing. Proceeds
from the event will go to the
upkeep of the Blessing Com-
munity Center plus the re-
wiring of the building. The
dinner begins at 11:30 a.m.
with prices set at $4 per plate.
Take-home orders of meat and
plates will be available at the
pits. Also included in the
activities will be a country
store and games for the
youngsters._ A
Republican, Democratic primaries
area Democratic voters (Pet. 7) will
vote at the MoPac House. Pet. 8
voters (Markham area) will go to
the Linnie Roberts Elemental y in
Bay City with Pet. 12 (Midfield)
voters casting ballots in the
Democratic primary at the Midfield
School House.
For the Republican primary,
voters in the Palacios area Pets. 3A
and 3B will vote at the Palacios
Library. Collegeport area voters for
the Republican Primary will vote at *'
McAlister Jr. High School fn Bay
City. The Republican polling loca-
tion in the Blessing area for Pet. 4
and 12 will be at the Blessing
Hotel.
On the primary ballot for the
county election will be onlv one
contested race. That is for County
Treasurer which has incumbent
Otis Bickham of Van Vleck being
challenged by W. Odie Milner of
Markharh.
Uncontested county-wide races
include Burt O'Connell seeking
re-election as county judge; Paul
Hatchett, incumbent for district
court clerk: and James Rother.
The only election for voters in
Pet. 3 is that for Justice of the
Peace where Jack Dooley is
seeking re-election unopposed. In
Pet. 4, voters will decide who their
Justice of the Peace will be
between Billy Jalufka of Blessing,
Lee Hall Pierce of Blessing and
Gary M. Piwonka of Markham. Pet.
4 voters will also decide on county
commissioner with A.W. "Al”
Hurta and William "Bill" Smith
Sr. both seeking that post.
One race that has been drawing
some attention is that for District
29 State Representative. Democra-
tic incumbent Tom Uher of Bay
City is being challenged by another
Democrat, Charles Roades of
Whartnn.
Among the state wide races
voters will be deciding on is that for
the U.S. Senate seat currently held

Bowers, Bates in runoff
election for PISD trustee
The runoff election to decide who
will be awarded the Position 2 seat
on the Palacios ISD Board of
Trustees will be held Saturday.
The runoff will be between Ted
Bates, Jr. and Nancy Bowers. The
two were forced into a runoff after
neither succeeded in gaining more
than 50-percent of the votes cast in
the regular election April 3.
PISD voters casting ballots Sat-
urday may do so at City Hall.
Residents fn the Collegeport area
will vote at the MoPac House with
those in the Deutschburg and
Carancahua areas voting at the
Deutschburg Community Center.
As of Monday, 12 absentee
ballots had been cast.
In the April 3 election. Bates
edged Bowers with 362 of the 856
votes cast. Bowers received 321
with a third candidate, A.J. Hebert
collecting 173.
The two candidates are seeking
the position being left vacant by
school board president Dr. Fred
Smith who did not run for
re-election.
Safety aides course
to commence May 4 AA, Al-Anon
anniversary
set Sunday
A Water Safety Aides course will
be taught beginning May 4 at 4
p.m. at the new city pool. Regis-
tration cards may be picked up at
the junior or senior high school
offices. These cards should be
tilled out and returned the first day
of class.
The Water Safety Aides course is
designed to provide training for
individuals who wish to assist
Water Safety and Basic Swimming
Instructors in conducting Red
Cross swimming classes. The aides
duties will be to assist the
instructors in 1. clerical, 2. supervi-
sory 3. instructional, and 4.
maintenance.
Eligibility for this class is as
follows:
1.11 vears of age or older.
2. A desire to give volunteer
service.
3. Exhibit sense of responsibili-
ty.
4. Completed the Basic Rescue
and Water Safety or Advanced
Lifesaving Course
There will be a pool fee of $1 per
student per day. Other fees will be
charged for textbooks.
The course will run three days.
May 6-8. The May 6 and 7 class will
run from 4-8:30 p.m. On May 8
class will be held from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. with an hour break for lunch.
Water Safety Instructor classes
will begin on May 10. You must be
17 years of age or older and have a
current Advanced Lifesaving certi-
ficate. More details will be in the
Beacon next week.
The Palacios AA and Al-Anon
Family Groups will celebrate the
6th anniversary of founding at a
meeting Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the
Episcopal Hall. 3rd and Main. The
public is cordially invited to
become acquainted with these
programs through three speakers
from Victoria.
Each speaker will tell "what it
was like, what happened, and what
life is like now since finding these
programs." A woman speaker will
tell of her Al-Anon program, and

PISD Trustees approved $690*000 bid
Admin building bid accepted
The Board of Trustees of the
Palacios Independent School Dis-
trict took another step in its
longrange facility upgrading pro
gram at its regular meeting April
19. From a group of nine bidders,
the trustees accepted a low bid of
$690,968.00 from Coastal Con-
struction of Victoria to construct a
district-wide administration build-
ing at the corner of Twelfth Street
and Highway 35.
The building of over 11.000
square feet will house a tax
collector's office, business office,
instructional superintendent's off-
ice, superintendent of schools
office, board of trustees meeting
room and a number of general
offices. Completion time is 300
days.
Other bids accepted were secon-
dary school parking lots and street
paving and parking lot lighting
projects. The John Yantis Com-
pany of San Antonio was granted
the contract for parking lots and
street paving on a bid of
$340,160.75. The project will be
constructed with a flexible base
surfaced with one and one-half inch
hot mix asphaltic concrete pave-
ment. Three bids were received.
Parking lot lighting bids were
received from five bidders with
Goven Electric of Victoria being
awarded the job on a bid of
$29,262.00.
In other business the trustees:
-Appointed Joyce Harvey. Pat
Walker and Melanie Dailey as the
trustees representatives on the
Area Swimming Pool Advisory
Committee. The Palacios City
Council will also appoint three
representatives to the committee.
The committee will serve in an
advisory capacity to the P.I.S.D.
and the City of Palacios.
-Called a special Board of
Trustee meeting for Monday. May
3. 1982 at 8 p.m. for the purpose of
canvassing the May I. 1982 trustee
run-off election voting.
-Heard several school patrons
concerning the employment of
athletic coaches.
-Conducted an executive session
discussion concerning professional

VISITORS were able to enjoy
scores of paintings, drawings and
other art work by local talent on
display at the Palacios Public
Library Saturday. The display was
part of the Art Festival Show which
was held in conjunction with
National Library Week. The Festi-
val was also teammed up with the
exhibits from junior high and high
