Un the strength of their
fastest 440 yard relay of the
year, 44.2 seconds, the Sharks
compiled 60 points to finish
fifth in the Boling Relays
Saturday.
The relay team, Michael
Roy, Fred Buckley, Kenny
Lee, and Robert Haynes, came
in third with only one step
difference among the top three
finishers.
Other point getters in the
running events were: Michael
Roy, 4th, 100 yard dash and
5th, 220 yard dash; Robert
Haynes, 5th, 100 yard dash
and 4th, 330 yard intermediate
hurdles with a good time of
41.7; Fred Buckley, 4th, 220
yard dash; George Parsley,
5th, who had his best time of
the year in the mile of 4.52.

Lee again captured first in the

City Councilman M.M.
Brooking, serving his first
term in office, resigned Mon-
day because of “unforeseen
personal complications.”
Four were in the race for
alderman (three to elect),
Ward Cook, Harold Bell and
Karl Wickham were seeking
re-election and John J. Peres
was the newcomer to the field.
Wesley Buller was to man-
age and operate the Palacios
Quick Freezing and Cold Stor-
age Plant on a trial basis.
30 YEARS AGO
Louise, Hungerford, Dan-
svang, Taiton and Palacios
were represented at a meeting
Friday night at Petersen’s
Cafe in the interest of organiz-
ing a baseball league.
Gulf Oil Corporation was
taking over the service station
at the corner of 4th and Main
from C. Luther.
Ten candidate’s names will
appear on the city ticket.
Three were in the race for
mayor. Incumbent Glenn Clay-
bourn was being opposed by
J.L. Koerber and A. Rioux.
Two aldermen were to be
elected with L.G. Margerum,
George W. Curtis and D M.
Green in the race.
Marriages announced were
Miss Ermine Harbison to
Wayne Tate; and Marv Jose-
phine Williams to Jack T.
Chiles.

In the city election Tuesday
86 votes were cast. In the
alderman race H.C. Campbell
received 75 votes, R.J. Sisson
69, Guy Claybourn 64 and G.L.
Pore 18.
Phil Silvers, comedian ap-
pearing with "The Band Wa-
gon" was to appear at Camp
Hulen April 1415.
40 YEARS AGO
Palacios Sharks were win-
ners in the annual track meet
held in Bay City. Among the
boys taking part were Leo
Brown, Delbert Whitley, Sher-1
wood Barber, Kenneth Parten,
Joe and John Ressler, Ed
Feather, Albert Kilgore, Eldon
Hamlin and Delbert Colvin.
The Glee Club of the
Palacios High School, under
the direction of J.D. Park, won
second place in the Music
Festival held in Kingsville.
There were 10,783 bales of
cotton ginned in Matagorda
County during the season of
1937. The total for 1936 was
3,353 bales.
Fifteen Palacios men were
seeking office in the city
election.
45 YEARS AGO
Col. and Mrs. Claude Ad-
ams, who had been in charge
of Camp Hulen for four years,
were leaving for their former
home in Crowell. Tex.
A.M. Stadigand A.E. Bald-
win were candidates for the
school board.
50 YEARS AGO
Shrimp season opened and
the Crawford Packing com-
pany began operation. The
first catch was brought in by
Howard Stapp, Jr. with his
boat, Morning Light.
Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Barnett
entertained more than 100 with
an oyster fry in the B.Y.P.U.
grounds.
Announced dates for the
annual Texas National Guard
Encampment at Camp Hulen
were July 8 to 22.
