Church Of God
Convention Here
November T7-20
A convention that is expected to
bo outstanding will convene at the
Church of God on Fourth Street,
Palacios, Texas, November 17th-
20th, closing at noon Saturday.
Services will begin in the State
Tabernacle, Wednesday night at
seven o’clock and continue through
Saturday noon.
Several things contribute to these
high expectations. The one thing
that causes the friends and mem
bers of the church to look forward
to with great anticipation, is the
unusual large number of officials
from General Headquarters, Cleve-
land, Tennessee. Arriving from
Cleveland by automobile will be:
Bishops M. A. Tomlinson, General
overseer of the Church of God;
L. V. Jones, State overseer of
Tennessee; D. M. Deadrick, former
Minister and assistant to State
overseer of East Texas of the
colored work.
Arriving Thursday, and coming
from the west in a continuation of
more than 14,000 miles convention
tour will be Bishops C, R. Payne,
Field Secretary of General Over-
seer; L. S. Rhodes, Manager of
the Fields of the Wood; and E. H.
Griffith, A. B. M. Secretary.
Then coming by plane are Bish-
ops Grady R. Kent, C. P. M. A.
Secretary; D. H. Queener, Foreign
Mission Secretary and Guy F.
Klapp, pilot of the plane. These
will arrive here Friday, being our
guest speakers on program Friday
night and on through the remain-
der of the convention.
While it is not unusual for
church officials to travel by plane,
yet this plane is a little out of the
ordinary. It was during a conven-
tion of the Church of God in Ari-
zona that Rev. Kent preached an
“inspiring” message in which he
connected the rise of the church
with the “first flight” of the air-
plane. An attendant, Rev. Guy F.
Klapp, was so impressed that at
the conclusion he asked for priv-
ilege of purchasing a plane for
the work of the church and offered
himself to go as pilot. This plane
was purchased at a cost of $13,000,
and both gifts were accepted by
the church.
Word has been received that our
plane was grounded in the North
West due to a snow storm but we
trust nothing will hinder their ar-
rival here.
The convention will be moderated
by Bishop John A. Stubbs, over-
seer of East Texas, succeeding
Bishop A. T. Griffin.
Day services are from nine o’-
clock through twelve noon and from
one p.m. through the afternoon.
Evening services begin at seven
o’clock.
Thursday is given to organiza-
tion of state workers and business.
A cordial invitation awaits every-
one, Rev. Stubbs said.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICE
Christian Science service will be
held at 10 o’clock Sunday morning
at 605 First Street. The public is
cordially invited to attend.
“Soul and Body” is the subject
of the Lesson-Sermon which will
be read in all Churches of Christ,
Scientist, on Sunday, November 22.
The Golden Text is: “Rejoice
the soul of thy servant; for unto
thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul”
(Psalms 86:4).
Among the citations which com-
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the
following from the Bible: “And
the very God of peace sanctify you
wholly; and I pray God your whole
spirit and soul and body be pre-
served blameless unto the coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Thes-
salonians 5:23).
The Lesson-Sermon also in-
cludes the following passage from
the Christian Science textbook,
“Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy: “Science reveals Spirit, Soul,
as not in the body, and God as not
in man but as reflected by man.
The greater cannot be the lesser”
(page 467).
"Love Conquers All"
Stars Gene Tierney
In KIOX Broadcast
“Love conquers all" is the theme
of Arthur Wing Pinero’s "En-
chanted Cottage” brought to the
radio by the Protestant Episcopal
families in this community on Fri-
day night November 19 from 7:00
to 7:30 p.m. over Station KIOX.
Miss Gene Tierney, star of many
Hollywood triumphs such as “A
Bell for Adano,” "The Razor’s
Edge,” “The Iron Curtain,” and a
host of others, will portray the
role of Laura. Walter Hampden,
beloved veteran actor of the stage
and screen and host on this series
of “Great Scenes from Great
Plays,” will play the part of the
old family friend, Major Hillgrovc,
and Richard Waring, long a fav-
orite with radio audiences, will
play opposite Miss Terney as Oliver
the war casualty whom she marries
out of pity.
How deep and abiding love works
a miracle on a limping, disillusioned
war casualty, how love transforms
a hopelessly plain British teacher
into a radiant beauty—and how
this physical transformation is still
invisible to the people of the out-
side world is the mystical thesis
of the plot. It is a story of a
modern miracle wrought by a good
woman’s love that transcends all
obstacles and refuses to recognize
any impediment to the attainment
of its goal. It is also the story of
glorious enchantment of a cottage
and of how two people found their
true selves within its ancient walls.
A fairy story for grown-ups, per-
haps, but also a story with a
