A Texas Historical Marker for
the First United Methodist Chur-
ch, Bay City, will be dedicated
and unveiled Sunday, Nov. 8,
beginning at 10:50 a.m. with the
morning worship services. The
origin of this congregation dates
to 1870 when circuit riding
ministers visited people living
along the Colorado River at Red
Bluff, one mile west of present
Bay City.
When the town of Bay City was
surveyed in 1894, the Methodist
congregation relocated and bou-
ght one of the first town lots. By
1897 they had built Bay City’s
first church structure. TTie con-
gregation purchased land at
Fourth Street and Avenue H in
1904 and worshipped there in an
open air tabernacle until a new
structure was completed in 1909.
This stone sanctuary served the
congregation until 1957 at which
time the present'sanctuary was
built on this site and had its
formal opening'inMarch of 1958.
The District Superintendent,
Dr. Bob W. Parrott, will bring
the dedication sermon with five
former pastors taking part in the
worship service. They are Dr.
Harry V. Rankin, Garnet R.'
House, T. Walter Moore, Don
Meador and G. Wayland Elmore.
Martha Hurta will be directing
the music which will include a
brass ensemble.
Immediately following the ded-
ication sermon and hymn of
consecreation the congregation
will adjourn to the historical
marker in front of the church.
Those taking part in the un-
veiling will be Bill Howze,
chairman of the Administrative
Board; Taylor Steves, chairman
of the Board of Trustees; Ray
Horton, chairman of the Mata-
gorda County Historical Comm-
ission and Fred Daniel, church
historian. Descendents of early
leaders of the church will unveil
the marker. Janie Savage Milner
and Barbara Savage Stell will
represent the Reverend Norman
Savage, early circuit rider and lay
minister; Rose Langham New-
man and Connie Langham Hale
will represent their father Charl-
es Langham who was on the first
Board of Trustees for the church
established in Bay City. The
services will conclude with child-
ren placing flowers on the marker
and the prayer of dedication by
the pastor, Reverend Bill Dugg-
er.
Immediately following the un-
veiling, a dinner will be served in
Wesley Hall. The public is
invited to attend this worship
service and ceremony of dedi-
cation.
