A $72,000 endowment to pro-
vide student scholarships has
been established at Wharton
County Junior College in Whar-
ton in honor of the late Florence
M. Trull of Palacios according to
Dr. Elbert C. Hutchins, presi-
dent of the college.
“This generous permanent
endowment will allow the good
that Mrs. Trull did in her lifetime
to live after her, touching and
enriching the lives of young
people for all generations to
come," states Dr. Hutchins.
The Florence M. Trull Mem-
orial Scholarship Fund has been
endowed by the Trull Foundation
of Palacios and Mrs. Trull’s
family: Robert B. Trull, Margaret
S. Trull, Jean Trull Herlin,
Gladys Trull Brooking, and Laura
Trull Shiflett.
Mrs. Trull and her family
founded the Trull Foundation in
1967 for the purpose of reli-
gious, charitable and educational
philanthropy. Mrs. Trull and her
husband established its pre-
decessor, the B.W. Trull Foun-
dation, in 1948. Mr. Trull died in
1957 and Mrs. Trull passed away
in 1984.
Mrs. Trull was born in King-
man, Kansas and lived as a child
in a sod house on the Cherokee
Strip of Kansas. Florence Mar-
garet Roberson was valedictorian
at Kingman High School and
graduated from Washburn Coll-

lived and reared their family.
They later moved to nearby
Palacios.
Mrs. Trull was well known for
her church and civic work.
Named Woman of the Year by
the Palacios Chamber of Comm-
erce in 1977, she contributed
generously to . many causes in-
cluding the First Presbyterian
Church of Palacios, Wharton
County Junior College, Schreiner
College, Austin College at Sher-
man, Stillman College and the
Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary. She was a major
contributor to the Palacios Libr-
ary. Mrs. Trull and her husband
also established scholarship fu-
nds at Palacios and Tidchaven
High Schools in memory of a son,
Carl, who died in 1941.
She quietly helped many you-
ng persons go to college through
loans or gifts. Her belief in the
importance of a college education
was evident to all in an era when
such feelings were rare. Her
outstanding contributions to the
field of education were publicly
acknowledged when she was
named an honorary member of
Delta Kappa Gamma, a teach-
er’s sorority.
The first scholarships from the
Florence M. Trull Memorial
Scholarship Fund will be award-
ed to students attending the 1988
Fall Semester at Wharton County
Junior College. Recipients must
meet all admission requirements
and present two letters of
reference from adults other than
relatives who know the student’s
background. Awards are to be
made by the WCJC Scholarship
Committee who will consider
such factors as high school
academic rank, financial need,
extracurricular achievements, a-
wards, and honors received.
Applications must be received
by July 1 for each fall semester
and Nov. 1 for each spring
semester. Scholarship awards
are made without regard for race,
color, creed, sex or handicap.
Additional information may be
rvtained by contacting the Stud-
ent Financial Aid Office at
Wharton County Junior College,

Library News:
BY JOHN HARTZELL
The Palacios Library invites
anyone and everyone to use our
extensive collection of periodi-
cals. Popular magazines such as
“People Weekly”, “Newsweek”
and “Time” are always avail-
able. New subscriptions such as
“National Fisherman” and the
“U.S. Coast Guard Notice to
Mariners” provide invaluable in-
formation to commercial fishing
interests. "Consumer Reports”
is a ready, reliable source of
quality comparisons in all lines of
products. “Humpty Dumpty”
and “Jack and Jill” are beloved
and much-used by children. In
all, the library subscribes to over
55 magazines and periodicals.
The Houston Area Library
System has awarded the library
an IBM-compatible computer for
administrative use. Many South
Texas libraries applied, but only
17 applications were rewarded.
This is another recognition of the
Palacios Library’s long-standing
excellence in leadership, per-
sonnel, and materials.
The computer likely will arrive
in December. We urge all
patrons who have unwanted
computer magazines and books
to donate them to the library.
