The library has ordered and is

The following recently have
contributed to the library: The

chase of large-print books; Mr.
and Mrs. Norman Brotcmarkle,
in ipemory of Donie Williams;
and John Hartzcll, in memory of
Joe Mangel.
After a really busy week and
weekend, 1 was looking forward
to a relaxing day today, but
things just don't always work
out that way. Guess the Lord
knows if we all slow down too
much, we might get lost. We can
be sure that if we stop or fall by
the wayside, the world will just
keep on turning for a few million
more years.
There was a good turnout at
the Masonic Lodge flagpole
dedication Saturday. The mayor
and Congressional Medal of
Honor recipient Roy Bencvides
were there, along with a few
visitors from other towns. Those
of you who did not come by
missed good burgers and trim-
mings, as we had some left.
Johnny Pcnland, "Cooler" Bates,
Ted Bates, Jr., and Dan Cham-
blce all joined in to get the cook-
ing done. Mr. Pctrisky and the
Marshals were there with a good
part of the high school choral
group. If you have not heard this
fine group perform, don’t miss
the next program. Queen Hamlin
Post 2467 presented the flags to
the lodge. The U.S. and Texas
Hag: look real good alongside
Hwy. 35. We accept the apolo-
gies of all you masons and deer
hunters who had more important
things to do.
I attended most of the semi-
nars put on by the Gulf Coast
Emergency Management Assoc,
at Lake Jackson last week. Also
the Flood Plain Managers Assoc,
meeting. When you get exposed
to all the good stuff, it is difficult
to remember it all. Scott Kiser,
with the weather service, said he
had little -tc-. -talk abriut .sirice._wc
had no serious hurricanes along
the Texas coast this year. Vic
Jones, from North Carolina,
who was to talk on Hugo, did
not show, as all their people
were busy assessing flood dam-
age, etc. from the recent heavy
rains. We heard the Coast Guard
reported on the Mega Borg inci-
dent and the fire chief some of
the problems in Bcllairc when a
pool of gasoline from an old tank
rupture was pushed over to flood
a manhole when a water main
burst a few blocks away.
We always think these things
cannot happen in Palacios, but
these folks all thought the same a
few years ago. So you all help
me get the word around, keep it
safe, and if you do note an un-
usual odor, smoke, or something
suspicious, please notify the au-
thorities. Your local fire depart-
ment knows how to deal with
most such emergencies. The
various codes and ordinances are
all based on past experiences and
arc needed since we live so close
together, and depend on each
other.
