Mrs. Lorenza Benavidies died
Tuesday morning, January 6, in
Wagner General Hospital following
a short illness.
Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. at
the Rendon Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral services were held Thurs-
day, January 8, at 8:45 a.m. at the
chapel and at 9 a.m. at St. An-
thony’s Catholic Church. Rurial was
in the Palacios Cemetery.
A resident of Palacios since 1961,
she was bom August 10, 1887 in
Mexico, the daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Rafael Alarcon.
Survivors include two sons, Elias
Nevarez and Roman Benavides of
Rohstown; four daughterss, Mrs.
Andres Garza, Mrs. Augustine
Benavides, Mrs. Manuel Quinta-
nilla all of Palacios and Mrs. Ven-
tura Sanchez of Corpus Christi; 20
grandchildren and 24 groat grand-
children.
Robert C. Hillyer
Masonic graveside sendees were
held in Goliad Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, January 7, for Robert
Carlton Hillyer, 79, who died in a
Tulsa, Okla. hospital Saturday, Jan-
uary 3, following a brief illness.
A member of Palacios Lodge No.
990 A, F. & A. M., he was born in
Goliad in 1891, son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Freeman Hillyer.
He was a graduate of the Univer-
sity of Texas, a retired chief en-
gineer with the Mexican Gulf Oil
Co., a veteran Of World War 1 and
a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rachael;
a daughter, Mrs. Mary Spillers and
two grandchildren all of Tulsa; a
brother, D. D. Hillyer of Louise;
two sisters, Mrs. Eva Brown of
Los Ang'eles and Mrs. Ethel Carle-
ton of Oklahoma
C. C. McDonough
One of Palacios’ oldest citizens,
Charles C. McDonough, passed
away Tuesday, January 6, 1970, in
Wagner General Hospital.
A resident of Palacios for more
than 20 years;, he was born Aug-
ust 8, 1873 in McDonough, 111,
Funeral esrvices were held at the
First Methodist Church Thursday,
January 8, at 2 p.m. with the Rev.
T. Irving King officiating. Inter-
ment was in the Palacios Ceme-
tery.
Survivors include his wife, EthgJ^"’

We started the meeting January
12 with the taking up of dues
while our leader called the roll.
Then we had the flag ceremony.
Later we had refreshments. Then
we made sack puppets. After that
we hail our goodbye tunnel.—

Spring Registration
To Be Held January
26-27 At W. C. J. C.
The Extension Division of the
University of Texas will offer a
graduato education class during the
coming spring semester on the
Wharton County Junior College
campus.
Titled as an institute in Instruc-
tion, the clam will meet one after-
noon each week for two and one-
half hours for a total of ten weeks.
Topics to be covered in the class
will be of interest to teachers in
the elementary grades as well as
junior and senior high school fac-
ulty members.
The class will carry three hours
of graduate credit from the Uni-
versity of Texas. Tuition will bo
$46 per person and textbooks will
be selected according to the inter-
est of the individual teacher.
An organizational meeting for
tho class will be held on Monday,
January 19, at 4:30 p.m. in Room
102, J. R. Peace Building on the
Wharton County Junior College
campus. All interested persons are
urged to attend this meeting.

Infant Newsom
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Newsom, 209 Ocean View,
Corpus Christi, died December 29
in a Corpus hospital. Funeral ser-
vices were held at Odem, Texas,
at 2 p.m. December 30 with tho
Rev. Tom McCloughn of the Wesley
Methodist Church officiating.
Besides the parents, he is sur-
vived by his brother, Billy, sister,
Melinda Newsom, both of Corpus
Christi; his paternal grandmother,
Mrs. B. [W. Tewes of Houston and
his maternal grandmother, Mrs.
Carrie Vance of Edna.
Anti-Crime Ahd
Narcotics To Be
Taught In Schools
AUSTIN—A special project de-
signed to integrate anti crime and
narcotics teaching into the public
school curriculum beginning Sep-
tember 1, 1970, was approved (Mon-
day, January 5, by the State Board
of Education.
The 20-month project, which will
outline a detailed blueprint for the
future, will be directed by the Tex-
as Education Agency. It has im-
mediate and long term objectives,
both types okeyed to the require-
ments written into law by the 61st
Legislature.
First, the Agency and cooperat-
ing groups will develop curricula
and teaching materials on the dan-
gers of crime and narcotics for
grades five through twelve. Special
in-service training for 2,000 teach-
ers will begin in February.
Miss Susie Bolling, of Wilcox,
Ariz., spent the holidays with her
father, Bill BolPrg in Bay City,
her grandmother Mrs. Jchn Bolling
in Palacios, and her Taylor rela-
tives in Seadrift. She flew home
December 30 after helping Mrs.
John Bolling celebrate her 89th
birthday on December 26.
