Volunteers raise the roof
Camp Builders spruce-up TBE buildings
BY CHRIS NEVAREZ
Beacon Reporter
Some new changes will be seen
at the Texas Baptist Encamp-
ment in Palacios thanks to vol-
unteers who ‘have tools and will
travel’.
Work is being done on two
dormitories at the encampment
by the Volunteer Camp Builders
of Texas Baptist Men. The men
are replacing the flat roofs that
the dormitories originally had
with gable roofs.
The Volunteer Camp Builders
of Texas Baptist Men is compos-
ed of a group of men who
volunteer their time and labor
toward church related construc-
tion projects. The men are mostly
retirees who range from the age
of late 50’s to inid-70’s. They
travel to the various camps and
churches where work is to be
done in motor homes and RVs.
The work at the Palacios en-
campment is expected to be
completed next week.
The Camp Builders consist of
two teams: the church builders
and the camp workers. The
church builders group was or-
ganized eight years ago and have
built approximately 26 churches.
The camp workers group was
organized two years ago and
have worked on approximately
five camps.
Both groups volunteer all the
labor and the churches and
camps furnish the materials.
The person in charge of the
group is E.D. Morgan from
Dimmitt. He said that the men
come from all over Texas and
help work on churches and camps
from all denominations.
Elree Smithart, director of the
Texas Baptist Encampment, said
that he came to Palacios in June
to be the camp director and it was
then that he heard about Morgan
and his group. He then went
about trying to locate Morgan
who said the Camp Builders
would be glad to undertake the
Palacios project.
The camp is owned and
operaced by churches in five
associations of Baptist Churches:
the Guadalupe, Galveston, Gulf
Coast, Colorado, and San Felipe.
Smithart says that this is the
beginning of many improvement
projects that are to be done to
upgrade the camp and its facili-
ties.
