Varsity Sharks find
district wins elusive
in outings last week
District victories eluded the Palacios varsity Sharks last week as
they failed in their bid to overtake Van Vlcck to open the week
and then lost to Sweeny on Friday. J ..
The Sharks were scheduled to host Necdvillc on Tuesday (Jan.
23) and then travel to Stafford on Friday.
The Big Red staged a strong comeback attempt against van
Vleck after falling behind 35-18 at the half. The Sharks went on
a 16-10 run in the third to narrow the gap to 45-34 In the
fourth, the club maintained the momentum, outscoring Sweeny
19-11 only to fall three points shy of tying the game.
Johnathan Sample fired a trio of three-pointers enroute to a
17 point outing. Ricky Jordan also reached double-figures with
14 as did Darren Okruhlik with 11. Eric Gonzales tallied four, J.
D. Diaz three and Cory Johnson and Keith Bates two each.
Sweeny proved to be unstoppable as the Bulldogs blanked
Palacios 15-0 in the first period on the way to a decisive 79-24

Okruhlik posted six points followed by Sample with five,
Gonzales four and Thang Tran, Johnson, Bates and Diaz with two
each. Billy Mitchell had one.

An impressive three-point
attack powered the Tidehaven
Tigers to a 21-9 first period
lead and they went on to cage
the Bloomington Bobcats in
Dist. 28-2A action last Friday,
74-63.
The victory was the first in
league play for the Tigers who
are now 1-2 in 28-2A while
improving to 6-13 overall.
Tidehaven was slated to return
to its home court on Tuesday
(Jan. 23) to host Danbury.
Despite the commanding 12
point lead in the opening
stanza, Tidehaven had to with-
stands Bobcat comeback* in
the second period. Blooming-
ton turned on the heat with a
27-19 scoring advantage in the
second to cut the deficit to 40-
36 at the half.
Bloomington’s output was
held by the Tigers’ defensive
effort to just nine points in the
third while Tidehaven widened

the gap to 56-45.
Jim bo Howell provided the
bulk of the Tigers’ firepower,
raining in 22 points while
teammate Jonas Edwards fired
for 15. Peter Quinn turned in a
solid performance, punching
the hoop for 14 points and
pulling down 13 rebounds.
Earlier in the week, the
Tigers were handed a 79-67
loss from Industrial despite
holding a narrow 31-29 lead at
the half. Quinn struck for 23
point to lead the Tigers’ scor-
ing with Rueben Alvarado.net-
ting 14 and Richard Rocha 12.

Despite a balanced scoring
effort, the Palacios JV Sharks
came up short against Sweeny
last Friday, 53-42.
The JV squad was slated to
host Needville on Tuesday
Jan. 23) and then travel to
Stafford on Friday.
Against Sweeny, the JV

by Aguilera and strong fourth
period shooting by Kelly
enabled the JV Sharks to hold
off Van Vleck earlier in the
week for a 40-38 victory.
Aguilera slammed the net
for 10 points and controlled
the glass with 16 rebounds to
lead the Shark attack.
The closing fought contest
saw Palacios take an 11-10 first
period lead and then hold a
22-20 advantage at the half.
After a low-scoring their pe-
riod by both clubs left the
Sharks on top, 28-23, the
tempo picked up in the final
stanza. Outscored 15-12 in the
period, Kelly’s six points
proved pivotal in the Sharks
holding on for the victory.
Kelly finished the night with
nine points while Vo netted
seven and Ramirez six. Tomas
Guardiola tallied four and Flo-
res and Allums had two each.

Utilizing a strong defensive
effort, the Palacios 7th grade
Sandshark “B” team pum-
meled Industrial last week, 21-
10.
Palacios took a 4-1 lead in
the first and expanded it to 8-4
at the half. The Sandsharks in-
creased the tempo in the third
to widened the lead to 17-6.
Tim White topped the
scoring column with seven
points followed by Robert
Matusek with six, Ryan West
four and Quan Nguyen and
Augustine Arriola two each.

Palacios Little League is getting ready to ‘play ball’ for the
1996 baseball season. Anyone interested in managing or
coaching a T-BaU, Minor or Major League team should con-
