STATE CHAMP OWLS BLAST LIONS 35-0;
TURNER PLAYS AT MESQUITE FRIDAY
The State Champ Garland Owls
went on a rampage Friday night
to overpower the R. L. Turner
■Lions 35-0 before a capacity
crowd of 12,600 fans who opened
the new Lion Stadium here. Both
teams are in 7-AAAA.
Garlands demolition crew did
its job well enroute to a sixth
straight victory of the season and
its 21st without defeat. Needless
<to say, the Owls are defending
state AAAA champs and again
top the rankings.
Clifton Turner turned foreman
for this job. The 155-pound senior
fullback scored three touchdowns
on runs of 6, 1 and 7 yards. He
carried the ball only 10 times and
netted a total of 30 yards for his
efforts.
Jimmy Adams, the Owls’ senior
quarterback, turned in his usual
solid performance as he hit 9 of
13 passes for 113 yards and a
touchdown. Adams’ 15-yarder to
Henry Luman in the second quar-
ter was his 10th touchdown pass of
the year.
The Lions managed to stay on
even terms with the Owls on the
ground. The Lions ran up 130 yds.
rushing, only one yard shy of the
Garland effort.
The Lions rushing attempts
were at a safe distance for the
Owls, however, only once, in the
final minutes, did the'lions get in-
side the Owls 20.
Tommy Hill intercepted a Bavia
Green pass at the Garland 33 and
the Lions marched down to the 19.
But the Owls’ Don Jacobs called
the drive abruptly when he inter-
cepted a James Mayfield pass at
the five and returned it down the
near side line 95 yards for Gar-
land’s final score.
Outstanding on defense for the
Owls were all-state candidate
Gene Mays, Rick Shugart, Luane
Cross' and Ronnie Cox. Defensive
leaders for the Lions were David
Wells and Hill. Troy Fletcher, a
reserve, led the Lions with 49
yards on 19 attempts.
