200,000th Phone
IRVING, Texas — A beige tele-
phone on the City Hall desk of
Irving City Mangaer Morris How-
ard has become the 200,000th tele-
phone in service for Southwestern
States Telephone Co. in its four-
state operating area.
The key-type telephone is con-
nected to a modern dial PBX sys-
tem just installed for the City of
Irving.
Brief ceremonies commemorat-
ing the telephone milestone for
Southwestern States were held in
the City Manager’s office, with
Howard and Irving Mayor Len
Brown present.
Representing the telephone
company were L. Gray Beck, ex-
ecutive vice-presidei t, and R. E.
Paulsen, vice-president, both of
Brownwood; and D. H. Dunaway,
North Texas division manager, of
Irving.
Both City Manager Howard and
Mayor Brown were presented
miniature telephone pen sets en-
graved to commemorate the occa-
sion. An engraved plate was af-
fixed to Howard’s telephone iden-
tifying it as Southwestern States’
200,000th.
Beck said it took over a half-
century for Southwestern States to
reach its 100,000th telephone in
April, 1955, but only 10 years to
