WATCH SANDWICHES AND
POTATO SALAD ON PICNICS
Nothing can live without food,
suitable temperature and an ap-
propriate amount of moisture. This
applies to man, animals, fish and
plants.
It also applies to bacteria!
The range of needs for bacteria
is slim, but when they are present
bacteria can be prolific, mutiply-
ing themselves by the millions in
mere minutes.
That is why food poisoning is so
much more common in warm
weather—and why you need to be

especially careful now about pre-
paring food and storing it.
The main rule to remember is
that bacteria which are apt to
cause food poisoning thrive best
in lukewarm foods.
Thus if you make it a hard-fast
habit to keep hot foods hot and
cold foods cold, the chances of
bacteria getting a foothold are
slim.
However, there arc certain foods
j that have proven to be more sus-
| ceptible to bacteria's growth and
the resulting food poisoning condi-
tions.
For instance, egg and milk mix-
j tures, including custards and

wiches, and potato salad—one of
the popular picnic foods—are of-

COME, LET US WORSHIP
TOGETHER
ten quickly suspected when food
infections occur in summer.
Making sandwiches and wrap-
ping them in wax paper to let
stand for hours before eating is
just asking for trouble. So keep
them well refrigerated.
Potcto salad can give lots of
trouble. The best way to avoid it
is to chill all the ingredients be-
fore mixing, and then store the
salad in shallow containers in the
refrigerator. Deep bowls retain the
room temperature in the center
portions.
Everyone loves a picnic. Enjoy
them, but a portable ice box and
a thermos bottle are musts if you
are going to minimize the chance
of summer food poisonings.
Trouble that looks like a moun-
'ain freni a distance, usually is
only a hill when you get to it.
I960 CONSERVRATION
RESERVE SIGNUP
DATES ANNOUNCED
Farmers who wish to put crop-
land in the Soil Bank’s 1960 Con-
servation Reserve program must
ask ttie County ASC Committee to
set a basic annual rate per acre
for the land to be offered for 1960
contracts. The period for filing
such requests is from August 24 to
September 10.,
The Conservation Reserve of
the Soil Bank provides for the
withdrawal of cropland from pro-
duction, helping to adjust total
crop production more nearly in
line with demand. At the same
lime, it provides that farmers
establish and maintain sound con-
servation practices on the land
they put in the reserve.
It is a voluntary program, under

State Bank
(Formerly The Carrollton State Bank)
Working to make a good County—better
which farmers sign contracts to
take part for a definite period of
years. In return, the Government
assists producers by sharing the
cost of establishing conservation
practices, and by making annual
payments during the period each
contract is in effect.
In netting the basic annual per
acre rate for land offered, the
county committee will take into
consideration the productivity of
the land and the rate will be lim-
ited to the local fair rental value
of the land based on the crops
harvested from it during the past
five years. When all the eligible
cropland on the farm is offered
for the Conservation Reserve, the
rate will generally be set 10 per
cent higher than the rate for only
part of the eligible land.
For Texas, the basic per acre rate
of payment under the 1960 Con-
servation Reserve is $12, the same
a; under the 1959 program. The
state average is applicable to Dal-
las County.
Information regarding eligibili-
ty and program requirements are
available at the office of your
local County ASC Committee.
