"A&P paid $4,807,128 in wages
and salaries to its Texas employ-
ees,” the food chain executive con-
tinued. “Other expenditures in the
state included $17,000,000 for food
purchased here for local sales;
$139,536 for taxes; $172,506 for
utilities; $399,762 for rents paid
Texans, and $2,179,617 paid Texas
railroads and truck firms for
transportation.”
Pointing out that these figures
“tell only part of the story,” Black
added;
"It is generally known that our
new profit averages only about
1 Vi cents per dollar of sales. A&P’s
1947 expenditures in Texas—as In
past years—were many, many
times greater than the profit from
our store operations here, even
though we made what we consider
a fair return.”
