A "pat on the back" for BayFest organizers
Dear Editor,
BayFest '89 was a tremendous success and I would like to
publicly thank its co-chairmen: Beverly Watson and Betty and Bob
Vames. They provided us with a well-organized, fun-filled,
family-oriented event which, apparently, successfully raised funds
for a deserving community project. We are so fortunate to have
such dedicated people in our community.
Credit is also due those many fellow citizens who worked so
hard manning the booths to make this year's BayFest the best
ever.
Yours truly,
John J. Lenihan
Beach Buddies did a wonderful job
Letter to the Editor
I’d like to thank the Beach Buddies in your area, on behalf of
the Center for Marine Conservation, for their tremendous support
of the Fourth Texas Coastal Geanup. On September 23, more
than 8,750 volunteers removed 156 tons of trash in just three
hours. This was the largest beach cleanup ever held in Texas! On
that beautiful Saturday morning volunteers showed a pride and
concern for our coastal areas.
The information collected by volunteers on data cards will help
to identify those users of the Gulf that are not complying with
Annex V of the MARPOL Treaty. We will publish a report in
1990 with the results of this cleanup as well as those held in 24
other coastal states.
Texas Beach Buddies have worked hard to show their support
for clean beaches and a safe and healthy Gulf of Mexico. To all
those who helped, you are wonderful!
Thank you,
Linda Maraniss
Regional Director

BayFest support of museum appreciated
Dear Editor
The Palacios Area Historical Association would like to express
its great appreciation to the Palacios BayFest Committee for
designating the museum renovation project involving the "Hill
Building" as recipient of proceeds from last weekend's BayFest
The renovation project will not only help preserve one of the
city's oldest buildings, but also provide the Palacios area with a
well-designed, permanent structure in which to display, record
and chronicle the history and heritage of the Palacios area. We feel
this will not only benefit the people of Palacios today, but those of
tomorrow as well.
We commend the many hours of dedicated hard work the
BayFest Committee volunteers put into each year's event to benefit
the community and this year’s was no exception. We are
extremely proud and honored for the recognition that BayFest has
given to the museum renovation project being undertaken by
P.A.H.A. There is much work to be done, but we are confident
that with support such as that shown by the BayFest Committee
and many other individuals, it will be accomplished.
Sincerely,
The Palacios Area Historical Association
Colleen Gayboum, Chairperson
Community support appreciated...
Editor
The band directors of Palacios High School would like to
express our thanks to the community for the support that you gave
us at our Mexican Food Supper Tuesday, October 3. The money
that was raised will be put to good use. It will be used to help our
group grow and continue in our goal of making the community
proud of us by providing the best musical presentations we can.
Special thanks go to the Palacios band boosters and all of the
parents who provided those fantastic desserts we all enjoyed so
much. Our appreciation is also felt for the use of the East Side
Cafeteria. We would like to thank Dr. Linda Reaves and P.I.S.D.
for its use. We know it is awkward hosting something of this
nature with all the construction going oa A heartfelt thanks goes
out to the East Side cafeteria staff of Evelyn Capak, Lidia
Gonzales, Hazel Gary, Elizabeth Jenkins, Margie Schneider, and
Pat Allen for their hard woik and the long day they put in. Thanks
also to Mrs. Bennye Adams for her help in coordinating the
dinner.
Homecoming night, October 20, the Shark Band will be
presenting its 1989 University Interscholastic League Marching
Contest show in its entirety. Due to the time needed at half time
for the Sweeney Band performance and the Palacios homecoming
festivities, we have been asked to present our marching
performance before the game at 7 p.m. We would like to invite the
whole town to come out and see this performance as it will be the
last in-town performance before University Interscholastic League
Marching Contest held in Victoria Saturday, October 28.
Sincerely,
Michael Cole and Wayne McBee
Elementary Open House support
Dear Editor,
We would like to give a special thanks to all the parents who
attended and made our Open House and Book Fair at East Side
Elementary School a success. Your support is always greatly
appreciated.

Old time tokens being sought
Dear Editor
I am a lover of history and I have a somewhat unusual hobby.
I collect old tokens used by stores, barber shops, pool halls,
bakeries, saloons, forts, and other businesses years ago. The
tokens were "good for" 5 cents, 10 cents, 12 1/2 cents or such in
trade or merchandise or good for" a loaf of break, one drink, one
shave, one ride or whatever. They were usually made of metal,
and while having the general appearance of a coin, they were made
in all shapes and sizes.
I know that this request is relatively unimportnat, but as our el-
derly pass away and the younger members of the family inherit
their possessions, tokens and other items are considered junk and
thrown out. I do get a great deal of enjoyment from my hobby
and I do believe that these concrete reminders of our great heritage
are worth preserving.
I have reason to believe that some of these tokens were used in
the Palacios area and I would be most interested in obtaining some
of them for my collectioa
I would like to hear from anyone having one or more of these
tokens or from anyone that might be able to help me. Any halp
that you can give me of any kind is greatly appreciated. My
address is Travis Roberts, Box 1168, Bellaire, TX 77402.
Thank you,
Travis Roberts

Last week Friday and Monday
were so busy, somewhere along
the lies the weekly comments of
the local "bad guy" got side-
tracked. 1 read a few comments
recently that sort of put my
thought in focus. After all the
words of wisdom I have written,
it seems as f the world just
hasn't improved all that much!
Saturday, Sept. 30, I spent
the day in Corpus Christi catch-
ing up on a few new ideas and
products. It is amazing that a
fireproofing product has been
developed to seal off a PVC
drain pipe passing through a
firewall. The flamability of this
product (plastic pipe and con-
duit), has caused many cities to
prohibit its use in the fire zone.
We also learned more about
lumber grade marks, counterfeit
methods, pressure treatment, etc.
Of special interest to those of
us who live in a hurricane prone
area were talks by Mr. Lee and
Mr. Flanagan, who are associ-
ated with the State Insurance
Board. Again it was brought to
our attention that flood insurant*
is not covered by most policies,
even though many agents may
lead us to believe this. Also
many folks are not aware that
there is a delay between the ap-
plication for flood insurance and
the time it will be in effect. Many
people on the east coast arc
finding out that property de-
stroyed by high water leaves
them with little coverage.
This was brought to our at-
tention here after "Carla", whep
many policies paid only far
damage above the high water
mark. So the extra money for
flood insurance might be well
spent. And again I will mention
that any reroof or addition should
be inspected by a state insurance
board inspector. This protects
your future insurability.
Thanks to all you folks for
turning out for a wonderful
BayFest. A lot of old friends
passed by the VFW booth. Frank
Mills was the proud winner of a
new shotgun. I hope he slows
up enough to try it out! :»1

Oct. 8th-14th
This week (Oct. 8-14) is National Fire Prevention Week. It is also a week
of awareness.
All of the fire departments in Matagorda County are staffed by volunteers.
These volunteers do not get paid for what they do. They are "on calf' 14 hours
a day, 7 days a week. Some departments offer fire and ambulance service
while others are only equipped for firefighting. Whatever the emergency,
these departments are here to serve the citizens of this county at no cost to
those citizens. Many times, two or three departments work together at an
emergency scene.
During National Fire Prevention Week, think about the fire department in
your area. Think of who you would call in case of an emergency, day or night.
Why not send a donation to your local fire department? The support you send
would be used to maintain or purchase equipment, medical supplies and
train personnel. It all comes back to you in the event of an emer-
gency.
Please support your local fire fighters. These men and women put it all on the
line every time they answer a call. They are there for you!
