Palacios junior high principal Mike Witte passes on a
reminder to parents of PISD secondary students that 6-
weeks tests will be given Nov. 21-23.....The Palacios
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will meet at
12 noon Thursday at the Chamber office. Directors will
review the results of their recent, election and discuss the
1989 banquet....Needless to say (so why are we saying
it?) we apologize for the 50-50 boo-boo on the front page
picture last week showing Coach Pat Walker hugging
one of his players. The player was good ol' Scott Koch.
Also Adam English made the two-point reception
against the Bluejays.....

State Comptroller Bob Bul-
lock said, early last week, that
the monthly tax rebates sent to
cities and counties that collect
local sales tax increased again in
November. Bullock's office
sent checks totaling $118.4 mil-
lion to 1,045 cities. Statewide,
the 1988 year-to-date payments
to cities are up 12.4 percent over
last year.
"The payments to cities and
counties continue to improve,"
Bullocks said. "The state's eco-
nomic recovery continues to pick
up steam."
Revenue to cities in the
metropolitan areas also increased
again this month. Houston is
still in the lead with a year-to-
date increase of 20.8 percent
over 18987. Dallas had an in-
crease of 8.3 percent and San
Antonio saw an increase of 8.8
percent. El Paso gained 11.8
percent and Fort Worth increased

10.2 percent. Austin's allocation
was up 7.9 percent.
Palacios' allocation was not.
In fact, Palacios' tax revenues
are down 5.92 percent for the
same period last year; down from
approximately $19,900 to
$18,700 while the records for
the year so far show a decrease
from $126,500 to $112,600 for
the year; a loss of 10.96 percent.
Bay City's revenues for the
3rd quarter fell off also, from
$144,800 to $129,800 for a loss
of 10.34 percent. However, the
1st and 2nd quarters were
stronger, giving Bay City an in-
crease of 3.97 percent for the
year so far. Matagorda County,
as a whole, is also up for 1988.
The figures show a 2.27 percent
increase over revenues of last
year.
Surrounding towns and
counties seem to be doing better.
Although Port Lavaca (down
9.12 percent for the quarter) and
Calhoun County (down 7.38%)
did not generate as much tax
revenue in July, August and
September as they did last year,
both have shown growths of
roughly 8.5 to 9 percent for the
year. Port Lavaca shows rev -
enues of about $541,400 so far
for 1988 (about half of Bay
City's total), while Calhoun
County as a whole generated
only about $60,000 more.
Edna's revenues took a small
dip for the quarter (down 2.43
percent), but is up 1.73 percent
for the year and Jackson County
recorded a small gain for the
quarter (up .79 percent) and is
also up for the year (4.28 per-
cent).
The strongest showing on the
tables comes from El Campo, up
.4 percent for the quarter, but up
a healthy 10.9 percent for the
year; and Wharton County as a
whole reflects a similar growth
trend.
As a point of comparison,
Meaning of Matagorda
The Biblioteca Nacional in
Madrid, Spain, verifies that the
meaning of the word
"Matagorda" in Spanish is "big
bush." Matagorda County was
so-named because o' :he
extensive cam, akes in the
coastal areas, "big bush."
