Rice survey to assist in
compiling 1990 farm bill
the price support levels for rice production in the
1990 farm bill.
"The last rice costs of production survey was
conducted for .the 1984 crop, and new data are
needed to update production costs and to compare
changes in fatm structure.
"This year's survey will provide industry lead-
ers and government agencies the information they
need to understand the costs of rice production in
Texas," Findley said.
The survey goes directly to the source, farmers
and ranchers themselves, to get an accurate picture
of the diverse financial conditions in Texas
agriculture. The Texas office will contact a
random sample of producers who represent all
types and sizes of agricultural operations in
Texas. All the survey information is collected by
personal interview and is strictly confidential,
individual reports are combine to determine state,
regional and national figures.
Texas farmers and ranchers saw their overall
financial position improve during 1987, but diffi-
culties still persist.
"The upcoming survey will provide the first had
answers to a number of questions related to the
drought-affected areas of the state," Findley noted.
According to results of the 1987 survey, 37-
percent of Texas producers had positive net cash
farm incomes and low relative debt levels, com-
pared with 25-percent a year earlier. Six percent of
the state's producers were in an extremely weak
financial position of negative income and relatively
high debt during 1987, down from 10-perccnt the
previous year.

Rice producers along the Gulf Coast will soon
have a chance to supply important economic in-
formation that lawmakers in Washington will use
when writing the 1990 farm bill.
Beginning Feb. 13, representatives from the
Texas Agricultural Statistics Service wili contact
farmers and ranchers along the coast and across
the state for the 1988 Farm Costs and Returns
Survey, an annual economic measure of produc-
tion costs and changes in the financial conditions
of Texas producers.
"The survey is extremely important this year
because we need to look at the overall financial
Impact of the drought on Texas agriculture. We
also need to determine if producers in drought-af-
fected areas changed any of their production prac-
tices of the prolonged dry weather," state statisti-
cian Dennis Findley reported.
In addition, lawmakers will use costs and re-
turns information from the survey for formulating
