Sevier, which resulted in perma-
nent possession of the Texas
shrine by the Daughters of the Re-
public of Texas, Senator Harry
Hertzberg of San Antonio, wrho
presented the portrait to the State
on behalf of the Daughters of the
Republic, said the “modern battle
of the Alamo had left it untouched
by the progress of commercialism.’
He told of the time when Mrs. Se-
vier had taken $65,000 of her own
money and bought the site on the
east side of Alamo Plaza in San
Antonio on which a movement was

sentative Johnson of Gillespie had
secured passage of a bill appro-
priating funds to reimburse Mrs.
Sevier and how the latter had
stood out in successful opposition
to the proposal of Governor Lan-
ham that he would sign the bill if
the provision giving the property
to the Daughters of the Republic
were left out.
Charles G. Thomas. Speaker of
the House, in accepting the por-
trait for the State, declared it was
a tribute to the womanhood of
Texas who had taken so prominent
a paid in the upbuildng of the com-
monwealth. He compared activi-
ties of the Daughters of the Re-
public on behalf of the Alamo to
sacrifices of the French women in
preserving their memorials of lib-
erty.
Mrs. Sevier, who during the cer-
emonies. occupied a seat on the
platform behind the Speaker’s
stand, was introduced by Lieuten-
ant Governor Davidson. The an
