Sharkette JV end
on winning note
Twelve-point efforts from
Stephanie Harris and Valerie
Hebert guided the Palacios junior
varsity Sharkettes to a lopsided
38-13 win over Ncedville in the
season timfe last Friday.
The Sharkcttes, under coach
Luz Arredondo, compiled a 12-
10 overall record and posted in
impressive 6-2 slate to win the
district race ahead of Sweeny (5-
2) and Rice (4-3).
"The season had it s ups and
downs, but when it was all over,
the kids came out on top follow-
ing that Sharkette tradition," re-
marked Arredondo.
Taking an 8-4 first period
lead, the Sharkcttes demolished
the Blucjays in the second pe-
riod, running off a 17-0 scoring
advantage to build a 25-4 lead at
the half. The team then coasted in
for the victory.
"The kids did a great job
against Ncedville," said
Arredondo. "In the first half they
worked the full-court jump press
extremely well and didn’t allow
Ncedville to take the ball down
the court to their offensive end."
Natasha Davis, Libby Serna
and Miriam Salinas balanced-out
the attack with four points each.
Stacie Conrad added two. Catina
Anderson led in rebounding with
eight.
In an earlier march, the Shar-
kettes steamed Rice 24-18. Sali-
nas topped the scoring column
with nine followed by Barbara
Gibson with seven, Davis and
Conrad with five and Hebert
with four.

Jr. High'ers earn
their way to show
PISD junior high students
were involved in "earning" a
ticket to attend the recent perfor-
mance of Hansel and Gretel pre-
sented by the Texas Opera The-
atre. Students painted several
wall murals depicting the path
through the woods. They also
made up advertisements for the
show and built some cardboard
gingerbread houses.
Dana Guerrero, seventh grade
Texas History student, made a
real, edible gingerbread house
that was used as the centerpiece
at the cast reception. The day
after the performance, Miss
Knight’s fourth period history
class performed an in-depth
experiment on the gingerbread
house and found that it was
indeed real and edible.
According to sources at the
school, "The students really put
a great deal of effort into their
projects in order to cam a ticket
to the show. We are very proud
of the effort made by our stu-
dents. Their projects reflected a
great deal of creativity and
imagination."
Michalik listed as
honors student
Joey Michalik has been named
to the Dean's Honor List for the
fall semester at Sam Houston
State University in Huntsville.

Michalik of Palacios, qualified

point average. An Agriculture
and Business major, Joey is a
1984 graduate of Palacios High
School.
Innocent bystanders
A PAIR of Needville Bluejays arrive too late to stop
this two-pointer from the Sharkettes' Debra Nelson
(24) during last Friday's district finale. Nelson tallied:
eight as Palacios posted a 42-32 win. The Sharkettes
faced Rice Consolidated Tuesday night in a playoff to
determine which team advances to Friday's bi-district:
tilt against Edna. (Beacon Photo by Nick West)
