Household

Law Cited
People who ' employ
household workers should
be aware of their responsi-
bility to deduct Social
Security taxes and to re-
port the wages paid, Pris-
cilla Ely, Social Security
branch manager in Brown-
wood said recently.
“An individual who pays
a household worker -
whether a maid, cook, gar-
dener, or even a baby
sitter - at least 050 in cash
during a calendar quarter
must deduct Social Secur-
ity taxes. Failure to do so
may mean having to pay a
penalty in addition to the
overdue taxes."
A calendar quarter is a
3-month period that ends
on March 81, June 30,
September 30 or Decem-
ber 81. “Therefore”, Ely
said, "the payment of
wages that average u
little as $4 a week would
amount to more than $50
for a calendar quarter and
would have to be report-
ed."
Additional information
about Social Security and
household employees may
be obtained from any
Social Security office or
from the Internal Revenue
Service Center for the
State. The Brownwood
Social Security office is
located at 300 N. Main and
the telephone number is
