New Tork.—8top making aspirin
—and thereby take tome of the
horror out of war.
Thl* assertion 1* a matter-of-
fact translation of one proposal
widely heard today. That > la to
end new war terrors by declaring
a holiday on scientific discoveries
for It was scientific dscoveres
that made the new war terrors
possible.
But these same scientific discov-
eries are the basie for untold good
as well as fqr unfold harm.
Take aspirin. Its btjme is phenol.
Phenol makes plcrlo acid, a major
Ingredient of explosives. It Is the
main stuff In England's famous
lyddite
It Is no Imagination, but a bit of
world war history, to link aspirin
and war. In the World War an
agent of Germany purchased all of
the consderable by-product phenol
which Thomas A, Edison was
making.
The agent did not ship the phenol
to Oermany to make explosives. He
wanted only 16 keep the Allies
from getting It for that purpose.
This he accomplished neatly, in the
United States. He bought tt for a
drug firm which converted |t into
aspirin **
Without phenol most of the radio
set* would have to bo made of oth-
er materials than synthetic resin,
which give them good electrical In-
sulation. Phenol s carbolic acid It
la part of many dyes.
Safety Matches Wonkt Go
The public might be asked to do
without safety matches and mer-
Curochrome. For hand grenades
contain chlorates, an. Ingredient of
the matches. And the mercury
base of tnercurochrome makes |
mercuric fulminate that sets off
grenadOR and high explosives
Three of the specifies for syph-
ilis would have to go along with
arsenic compounds tw*ed In some
of the war gases The three are
arsphenamlne, neoarsphenamlno
and mepharsen
If the most terrible of the war
gases, mustard, was abolished by
the proposal of stopping science,
there would no longer be any
chlorine for purifying drinking wa-
ter source*, or for antiseptic *wlm-
mng pool*.
Anosthotes Might Go.
mustard gas
new anesthe-
tic*—those made from ethylene
cad.
Some of the essentials of peace
might be apared because they do
not come from tffe few chemicals
needed In vast volume to support
modern war. But other thousands
of necessities of peace would have
to go If Inventions which fumUh
war lta prncpal horrors were scrap-
ped
The other big volume chemicals
of war are toluol, which appears
not only In TNT, but also in dyes
anesthetic* and soporifics, synthet-
ic nitrates, which are found in both
explosives and fertilizers thermite,
which is eeserttlal to incendiary
bombs and to welding
It would be easy to forecast loss-
es of million* of live* due to too
sudden lose of the peace time Im-
plements and modes of living has-
od <>n these few classes
