Bluccdts Face Stern Test In
Breckenridge This Friday!
Both Teams Are 1-0
By Stan Brudney
Fresh on the heels of a defensive
inspired victory over Comanche, the
Bluecats take their show on the road
to Breckenridge Friday night to
meet the 6-AAA “Green Men.”
Bill Grissom’s Bucks pelted Iowa
Park in their season opener 28-14
last Friday while the Cats were
“stealing" (six interceptions) a vic-
tory at home, 36-7. Breck has
endured the unusual the past two
years...two straight losing
seasons to include last year’s 4-6
chart. The Bucks, and their fans, are
strictly strangers to defeat and they
are hoping for a winning season in
1985. Pollsters have them neck and
neck with Graham for the 6-AAA
title, so apparently, they are much
improved.
Assistant Coach Jack Baucom
scouted the Bucks at Iowa Park.
“They are improved, offensively and
defensively”, he mentioned last
Saturday. That’s bad news on the
local scene. Breck avenged a 35-14
bi-district loss in Abilene to the Cats
in '83 with a mirror, 35-14 victory
last year at Hufford Field.
Local gridders have been assault-
ed over the years by "Breck’s Bad
Boys”....for instance, setbacks like
the following: 57-20 in ’75, 42-0 in
1977, 36-7 in 78, and 33-0 in 1979.
The Cats posted two victories since
1975, covering a span of seven
years...a 3-0 victory in 76 and the
35-14 bi-district conquest in '83.
Since I have been on the local scene
covering the Cats, CHS has never111
won in Breckenridge (since 1972).
Bill Grissom is in his second year
as head coach at Breck. He has a
potent offensive combination at his
disposal this year....a pass and catch
combo to include junior quarterback
Grant Gibson (6-1, 170) and senior
wide receiver Gary Oliver (6-3, 170
with 4.6 speed). Oliver is a top
major college prospect and has been
included on many pre-season all
state lists. Last week, the shifty,
glue-fingered wide receiver was
selected as offensive player of the
week in 3A by the Abilene Reporter
News...five catches, 109 yards and
three of the four Breck TDs vs. Iowa
Park (14, 15 and 45 yards).
Oliver is a cut above his peers.
Viewing a film pitting Breck against
Mineral Wells in a scrimmage
earlier this year, Oliver made
one of the most outstanding
catches I have ever witnessed....
high school, college or pro. From all
reports, it was just another day at
the office for the “Swann-
like’ysenior.
ach Randy Smith says, “Breck
lot like us in their makeup...
ey are quick and aggressive". “It
ishould be a good football game
Friday night." “We're looking for-
ward to it."
The Bluecats are healthy entering
the big non-district game. Players
know how important this contest is
to them ..an important stepping
stone to hopefully a great grid
season at CHS. I agree with Smith.
Friday night’s shootout ought to be
a “humdinger". Kickoff time is 8:00
p.m.
