Last Monday Annie (Witten)
Payne, my cousin of Lampasas,
died after a long illness. Shehad
been in a rest home for
some time. Her husband died in
1973. They were both in a
Lampasas rest home then and
since then her son Frank Payne
moved her to Longview where
he and his family lived. She was
in a rest home there. Last
Sunday they took her to their
home and she enjoyed it. She
had -a massive stroke and died
Monday in a few hours. They
had been taking her to their
home on weekends. Annie was
a sweet person and loved her
family. Survivors are two sons,
Norman Payne Jr. of Michigan
and Frank Payne of Longview;
and two sisters; one brother;
and six grandchildren. One son
was killed in World War II. Her
funeral was at a Lampasas

The natural gas industry has an
excellent safety record.
The fact that you can smell
natural gas is because we add a
harmless chemical to it as a
Safety feature. Otherwise,
it would be completely odorless.
If you detect faint whiffs of
what you think may be gas, in-
vestigate. It may be something
that is as easily and safely cor-
rected as a pilot light that has
gone out, or a burner valve
that's partially open.
If your equipment seems to
be working properly and the
odor intensifies and seems to be
everywhere, please follow these
precautions:
<0 Do not switch anything
electrical on or off. Do not
use the telephone in your own
home. Do not strike a match. Do
not do anything that might
cause a spark.
A Have everyone leave the
Sf house immediately, leav-
ing doors open to help ventilate.
^ Go to a nearby telephone
w* and call Lone Star Gas
Company. Wait until we have
found the source of the odor to
determine whether it's safe for
you to return to the house.
You may never have a
natural gas leak, but we want
you to be informed in case one
does occur. Please make sure
your family is aware of these
precautionarysteps. And we
suggest that you keep this mes-
sage for future reference.
