Wins Medal
At UIL Meet
On March 31, a group of
students, grades 2 through
8, from the Bastrop I.S.D.
traveled to Lampasas for
the District U.I.L. competi-
tion. Among the particip-
ants was Chad Summers,
grandson of local residents
Mr. and Mrs. Max Horne
an<ft Mr. and Mrs. John
Summers.
Chad, a second grader,
placed first in Storytelling,
winning a gold medal for
his efforts. He also contri-
buted to the winning of a
trophy by his second grade
class for highest scoring in
their class.
He is the son of John and
Mitzi Summers.

Beef Given
At Senior Ctr.
Kirby Vanover, County
Extension Agent, and
Alice Hemphill of Circle C
Cow Belles presented a pro-
gram on “Beef In The Diet”
at the Senior Center on
Monday at noon.
The presentation focus-
ed on the new, leaner beef,
and how it fits into a
balanced diet. Information
sheets were distributed to
those attending.

HOME FROM HOSPITAL
Mrs. Lillian Stafford re-
turned home Thursday
where she is recuperating
from surgery on her other
knee. The first knee sur-
gery was done in January.
She was a patient in Scott
and White Hospital in
Temple, and then spent a
week convalescing at the
home of her son, Charles
Stafford, in Taylor.

As men grow older the
chances of developing pros-
tate disorders, including
cancer, increase. Men over
50 arc advised by the Amer-
ican Cancer Society to have
a prostate examination as
part of their regular health
checkups
YWS Raises
$566.50 In
Fund Drive
The Young Women's
Society raised $566.50 dur-
ing their recent fund drive
to benefit St. Jude Chil-
dren's Hospital. The
money is to be used for
research studies to find
cures for leukemia and
other forms of cancer
which strike young chil-
dren. Already, break-
throughs have been made
which have enabled many
children to live normal

lives, when, a few years
ago there was no hope.
The Young Women’s So-
ciety appreciates the gene-
rous contributions for this
worthy cause. "The YWS
is here to help" states
publicity chairman Colette
Tabor; so if anyone knows
of a person needing help,
financial or otherwise,

THERE ARE SMILING FACES in the Home
Economics department at CHS again, as classes
were resumed there a week ago, following the
damaging fire there last November. In the top
photo, posing in the kitchen area, ore Bonnie
Brown, left, and Lorene Halfmann, Home Ec
teachers. All appliances and equipment in this
room are new, and cabinets have been lowered
to a more accessible level. Bottom photo is of
the sewing room. There are new cabinets in this
room, but the other furniture and equipment
was not heavily damaged and has been cleaned.

and I went to Leisure
Lodge for games. Wednes-
day, Brenda O’Bannon
gave an excellent program
on “Food and Kitchen Saf-
ety”. She talked about Sal,
Clois, Stap and Bad Bot; do
you know these bad guys?
Friday was the birthday
party. Those having birth-
days in April were Herman
Estes, Edgar Nealy, Bessie
Woodard, Myrtle Savage,
Angell Adams, Newt
Staggs, Shorty Raymer,
Anna Luna, Iva Ham
monds and me. This year 1
got to join the program.
Ruby Martin made a rabbit
for the center around the
name tags. Dee baked a
rabbit design and Cora
decorated it for the birth
day cake. Today. Monday,
Alice Hemphill from Circle
C CowBelles handed out
folders and recipes, then
Kirby Vanover talked to us
about “Beef in the Diet".
Wednesday's program will
be “Girling Home Health"
by Gloria Willen. Thursday
we go to Holiday Hill for
games. Monday, the 7th,
