Fire Destroys
Novice Home
The home of the Rhodes Morris
family in Novice was totally
destroyed by fire Thursday after-
noon. Two units and two crews
answered the call at 3:55 p.m. but
were unable to do more than keep
the fire from spreading to surround-
ing areas.
No one was at home when the fire
broke out. It was spotted and
reported by the crew of a Santa Fe
train passing through Novice. Cause
of the' fire was undetermined,
according to Raymond Carnes.
Friday morning at 6:40 a.m. all
units of the Coleman Fire Depart-
ment responded to a call from
Creative Ceramics. The fire was
confined to the west end of the old
building there, currently used as a
coffee room. The area was formerly
an office at the plant.

ment cheese and butter are distri-
buted, starting at 1:00 p.m.

Mrs. Bruce Has
7th Book Out
'Four Years In The Co/eman Jail'
Leona Bruce of Santa Anna has
her seventh book out, the shipment
of books arriving just today, with
the interesting title of “Four Years
In The Coleman Jail”, with the
sub-title of "Daughter of Two
Sheriffs.”
Mrs. Bruce’s other books are:
Trickham Texas, Banister Was
There, They Came in Peace, First
Lady on Home Creek, Santa Anna’s
Peak and Our Bruce Family ... and
she says positively that this will be
her last book.
The books will be available at the
Coleman newspaper office and from
Mrs. Bruce in Santa Anna. It is
understood that an autographing
party will be held soon.
The forward from the new book is
reproduced as follows:
FORWARD
“I have a story to tell, a true
story, not remarkable and yet one
that has never been told. It is of life
and happenings in a small-town
County Jail, from 1914 to 1918.
“The unusual thing about it is the
time, just when saddle-horses were
too slow and the Model T Ford was
ready, though the county roads
were only of dirt or gravel with the
native grass pared away.
“The sheriffs car had to go when
he was called, through bog-holes,
windstorms, dark of night or heat of
day. And the driver was a girl of

sixteen, just out of high'sehool, too
young for college, but old enough to
be present at hundreds of arrests,
watch a murder, outrun a woman
with a rifle, unlock the jail cells a
thousand times, see her father, the
sheriff, face six angry and hostile
men calmly, drive with an insane
person or a criminal beside her on
the front seat; living every day with
adventure.
"It could never have occurred
before that time and can never
occur again. My four years were the
turning point, and I happened to be
there."
