Lions Club to Sponsor
Halloween Carnival
Being a service club and determining a
need for a community event during
Halloween, the Jacksboro Lions Club would
like to invite your club or organization to
participate in a Halloween Carnival by
having a booth. The carnival would be held
on October 31, at the Jacksboro Armory.
The Lions Club sees this as an opportunity
for our dub to be of a community service
through acting as a co-ordinator of the
booths, so as not to have several of the same
ones. We feel that this type event would be
very good for our community, especially at
this time of the year.
All the money raised from your booth
would belong to your club. The only cost to
your club would be the fee charged for the
in Tractor-Trailer Accident rental of the armory, which could be as much
as $50.00, equially divided among the
participating clubs, pro-rated per number of
booths.

SEE WHAT A DIFFERENCE
THE RIGHT SALON PERM MAKES.
J.E. Abbott, Jr. of 1907 S.E. 18th Street in
Mineral Wells was killed, at approximately
3:05 p.m., Saturday, September 12, when the
tractor-trailer rig he was driving, left State
Highway 148, 10 miles North of Jacksboro
and flipped nosed down.
Abbott was the driver of a 1970 red and
white, International cab-over Trans Star
truck with a lo boy trailer, carrying a small
dozer.
He was on his way home to Mineral Wells
after pulling a truck, that had been stuck, on
a location just South of Henrietta, from the
mud.
Abbotts truck was southbound on 148,
traveling at or near the speed limit, when the
truck gradually veered to the right at an
angle of three or four degrees, onto the
narrow shoulder of the road.
Due to highway construction, which is on a
mound, it! drops off rapidly toward the fence
line, causing a difference in elevation of
about 15 feet.
According to Jeff Holland, investigating
Department of Public Safety Trooper, the
truck continued off the roadway for about 230
feet, the truck being completely off the road
and leaning to the right, due to the slope.
"It was at this point", stated Trooper
Holland, "the truck jack-knifed to the right,
continuing to the bottom of the ditch, before
flipping nose down, forward and to the right.
This action broke the fifth wheel from the
trailer, allowing the dozer to slip from the
trailer.
Abbott was partially ejected from the
truck, at this time, with the upper portion of
his body outside the cab of the truck. When
the truck came to rest in its final position, the
roof and door frame collapsed, pinning him
in the vehicle."
Trooper Holland said he could find no
evidence that Abbott had tried to recover
control, such as hard steering or braking.
There were no skid marks and no defects with
the truck or trailer were evident.
Holland was called at 3:45 p.m. and arrived
on the scene at 3:59 p.m. along with the
ambulance.
L.R. Caskey, Justice of the Peace for
Precinct #3 in Jack County held an inquest at
the scene and pronounced Abbott dead at
4:34 p.m.
Others assisting at the scene were James
Rhoten, Joe White, Burl Downing, J.C.
Romines and off duty Police Officer, Gene
VanBaale, who came with John Pursley,
driver of the wrecker.
Students to Observe
Government Day in City
Wednesday, October
14, Jacksboro High
School government
students will be going
into the community to
learn how city, county,
state and U.S. govern-
ments work in "real"
life.
Each student is
assigned to accompany
a government worker
during a regular
workday and to learn

as much as he or she
can about the duties
and responsibilities of
each worker.
The student will then
return to the classroom,
write a report, and
explain to classmates
what was learned.
We hope by this
activity to teach these
young people just how
much our local govern-
moats serve the com-
munity and to give
them a favorable
picture of how people
work together for the
good of all of us in the
community.
This understanding
will help make them
better citizens when it
is their turn to vote and
take active part in the
local governments.
Eighty-one students
will take part. They will
be riding in police cars,
ambulances, and with
the fire truck, should
each go out.
They will be at the
post office, the court
house, the city hall, the
water plant, on the
streets, in the hospital,
and with county
commissioners, the
mayor, and the fire
chief.

Your club would be responsible for the
setting up, taking down and operation of
your booth during the carnival. Each booth
will need to be under adult supervision.
We plan to have a meeting of all interested
clubs on Tuesday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m.
at the Lions Club building. We ask that if
your club is interested, one or two
representatives be present. We ask that they
be prepared to write down your club's three
choices of booths in order of prioritv.
The Lions Club committee will then
arrange these and notify your club. There
could be a possibility that each club could
have more than one booth, depending on the
interest.
The Lions Club hopes that your club will be
interested in this project, since this would be
of benefit to our community, as well as to your
club.
