Experiments Have F-rfved That the
Deck Does Not Naturally Take
"to the Water.
It lias turned out, under the
searching experimentation of recent
years, that much that we have sup-
posed to be instinct in animals is
not instinct at all, writes E. T.
Brewster, in McClure’s. For ex-
ample, the young duck proves to
have no instinctive impulse to enter
the water ; does not recognize the
element by sight; is, in short, in
precisely the same situation as a
chick—until, by happy chance, it
gets _ its legs wet. Wet legs, how-
ever, and the lift of the water on
the body at once start up the swim-
ming reaction; and away sails the
duckling, as chicks and children do
not. - ' r
The chick, on its part," has a def-
inite instinct, to peck at any small
object that»catches its eye. That
takes care of its feeding. But the
chick has no corresponding instinct
to drink, and wouldvdie of thirst be-
fore it would recognize watev by
sight alone. Drinking it has to learn
for itself, by picking at (jewdrops,
or spots of “light on the stfrfacc of
the water, or particles at the bottom
of. its cup. Even the lien, contrary
to general belief, proves to have no
instinctive.fear of the viler for her
offspring. A hen that has raised a
few broods of dudes ami seen them
take to the water becomes highly
distressed when a subsequent hatch
of chickens do not swim. In fact,
liens have been reported, under these
,circumstances, to lead their chicks
to the waterside and push them in.
ITALIANS IN ARGENTINA.
The Italian is the principal im-
migrant. He is easily assimilated
into citizenship because 6f the lan-
guage, religion and mod* of living.
The very best class of Italian immi-
grants have come hither and now
form a highly respected; portion of
the population. If furnishing ex-
amples of thrift and industry to a
people so lacking in these qualities
as some classes of Argentinians are,
is a sufficient reason for a grant of
citizenship these people deserve it.
Whole colonies of Italians have been
established in various places. So
large a percentage of the immigrant
class has come from Italy that they
have even had some <!flect upon the
language noticeable in the modifica-
tion of the sounds of i he letters.—.

Dry Land for Sheep.
It is generally well kno)vn that
sheep require a reasonably dry cli-
mate and land that Is well drained,
but It often happens that farmers un-
dertake to raise sheep on bottom land
that is too wet to plow for crops. If
sheep are kept on such land for any
| length of time, trouble is sure to fol-
low. Sheep cannot stand wet feet,
and they muBt have dry ground to
sleep on at night.'- Sheep He down a
great deal when ruminating. Unless
the ground is dry and warm they are
sure to suffer. Besides foot rot, in-
ternal' parasites that affect sheep are
worse’on wet land. The hoof of the
sheep Is golden only/ when the hoof
Is dry.
