When there is a heated campaign
it is one of the surest signs that
the ship of state is sailing safely.
•
It is when everything is quiet and
the people are asleep, a calm,
that there is danger. The only dan-
ger is from the man who becomes
disgusted with extreme partisan-
ship and refuses to vote. We be-
lieve in voting. We believe that to
vote is a privilege and a duty of
every citizen.
Gov. Colquitt said in his speech
Thursday night that the people did
not want a prohibiton or an anti-
prohibiion governor. They wanted
a business man for governor. Then
why did not the people bring out
such a man. Ferguson has been
the most ardent Anti in the state,
has always fought against local
option, regulation of any kind,
statewide and everything. The
saloon and liquor interests do not
have sentiments stronger than what
Ferguson has always ardently
preached.
The editor of the News believes
in partisanship. We believe in
taking sides and standing up for
what one feels to be right. But we
do not believe in a partisanship
that makes enemies of friends or
that will cause hatred and malace.
As we have often said the men who
are against you now in this cam-
paign may be shoulder to shoulder
with you in another campaign.
There is no need for any man to
get mad and abusive over any man
or measure. Men see things dif-
ferently but each has a right to
his ideas and opinions.
The coming election is the most
important the state has had for
many years, perhaps the most im-
portant she has ever had. It is a
turning point. Col. Ball stands
for taking up and solving, if pos-
sible the greatest and oldest pro-
blem the world has ever known.
It has caused wars, bloodshed, the

Nor HowIi
A little boy was out in the yard
howling at the top of his lungs:
“Mommer, oh Mommer, I wish
you’d make Tommie quit, every
time I hit him on the head with
the hammer, he hollers. ” That is
the attitude of Mr. Ferguson in
this campaign. He tells something
terrible on his opponent and then
when his opponent proves he
was mistaken by overwhelming
evidence he howls some more. He
has told it in strong language all
over Texas how Tom Ball fought
Wilson in the convention that nom-
inated Wilson, how Ball fought
Bryan in the same convention, how
Ball fought Hogg away back
yonder at the noted state conven-
tion. He told these things so
vehemently that even people who
knew there was not a word of
truth in it began to doubt their
own knowledge.
Now, President Wilson sends
Ball the following letter:
“Some of your utterances in the
present campaign in Texas have
reached me and I cannot let them
go by without expressing to you
my deep appreciation of the splen-
did and unequivocal way in which bothLered with indigestion.

“Several years ago, manufac-
turers erected buildings, put in
boilers, and lathes and other ma-

until the bicycle craze was over
then they used the same boilers,
the same machines to give us
sewing machines and automo-
biles. The average farmer must
be show n that he has fixed cap-
ital that will produce something
besides one specialized crop.
When you produce something
besides the one specialized corp
you begin to feed yourselvek, and
(hen you break up this balance
of trade against the farmer
fcaused by specializing in cotton.
The average farmer in Texas at
the present time is not in a po-
sition to hdp you ori this market
question, because demand is
made up of two factors, i. e..
desire plus ability to obtain, and
he has been caught in the
squeeze. Tie has the desire for
the good things to put on his
dinner table; but he has not the
wherewithal to transform that
desire into demand.’’
